About the role
The Infrastructure Technical Services Manager is a key senior role and would provide an excellent development opportunity for candidates who wish to progress and develop their career. A background in third line technical support in a large organisation is a fundamental requirement.
The teams to be managed look after all the key elements that provide the basis for all IT service provision and they currently have an excellent record in keeping unplanned downtime to an absolute minimum through such activities as proactive management and monitoring of key infrastructure services, systems, processes, upgrades, and security patching and tightly controlled change management.
The primary roles of the technical specialist teams to be managed are described below – the Technical Services Manager is expected to be the focal point in managing major incidents for these areas as well as being the primary point of contact in discussions with colleagues, suppliers, national and government agencies. As the infrastructure is the main building block for provision of all services to a very large user base then many project teams will require detailed input, advice and consultancy from this role.
Windows servers, virtualisation and storage the virtualised server management infrastructure includes over 1,000 Windows servers, some linux servers and various software appliances. Data management including storage, backup and recovery as well as VM management at server level.
Active Directory, Device & Security Management. Tens of thousands of users and devices are managed via Active Directory and Microsoft Networking services (DNS/DHCP). Additional management tools are used for patching, encryption, endpoint protection, AD disaster recovery and archiving. MS Group Policy management, desktop build, windows performance and upgrades are all managed centrally.
Desktop management & Application Provision NHSGG&C has over 800 applications ranging from Microsoft products to bespoke software, the vast majority of which are packaged and distributed centrally utilising application virtualisation and MS Configuration Manager/Intune technology including large VDI environments (VMWare Horizon/Microsoft AVD).
The successful applicant will be a main driving force in ensuring that the departmental change management process is adhered to at all times and have operational responsibility for the management of monthly security patching across tens of thousands of workstations and hundreds of servers.

- Leadership and management of support teams involved in managing the technical infrastructure

- Ensure that systems and support teams operate safe and secure processes and procedures which can be evidenced to be in line with NHSGGC and National policy.
- Manage budgets and contracts in line with NHSGGC financial instructions and ensure that best value is achieved.
- Identify and implement service improvements within area of responsibility and support of wider initiatives.
- Lead on working with project teams and third parties to develop, deliver and transition change into operational support, having the responsibility for the definition and adoption of service design standards, OLA/ SLAs, system monitoring and pro-active maintenance.
