Job Description Position Purpose summary: The Food Bank Worker is responsible for the operational and maintenance aspects of the Simcoe Food Bank. This involves donation management and organization of food / non-food items for client distribution. Key to this role is the effective development and training of a food bank volunteer team. The incumbent will support a wholistic, relational and transformational approach to the delivery of Community Services Programs, including the Food Bank.

Accountabilities

  • Operations & Programming
  • Ensure that the food bank is well maintained / adequately stocked, sorts and processes donated goods
  • Aid with processing, unloading, documenting, and sorting donations food for the Food Bank program and assist with preparing donated items for distribution.
  • Maintain food bank cleanliness, tidiness, and organization of food bank area, freezer room, kitchen, and all client areas.
  • Accept, organize, sort, and distribute perishable and non-perishable food products to the community on established operating days.
  • Assist clients with food selection in the food bank
  • Engage with clients in a manner that is consistent with the values of the Salvation Army, seeks to advance our mission and provide holistic support to those we have contact with through our Food Bank program
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, productive and supportive relationships with participants, colleagues, volunteers, students, corps members, and community partners.
  • A strong understanding of professional boundaries and the ability to establish/set appropriate boundaries when working with a vulnerable population.
  • Maintain Food Storage and freezers in compliance with Safe Food Handling Standards. Ensure Food Bank is restored using the First In, First Out (FIFO). Regularly check expiration or best-before dates of product in Food Bank and Food Storage areas.
  • Maintain accurate records of refrigerator and freezer temperatures; report any issues to the supervisor.
  • Arrange for discarding of food products that have expired in accordance with policy.
  • Assist in food procurement through Feed ON (SNAP), Second Harvest and other food rescue sources.
  • Work with other CS staff to maintain, promote and improve the profile of TSA Simcoe Community Church and CS programs to clients and within the community
  • May assist with other CS programming, or intake responsibilities when needed.
  • Support, assist, and train food bank volunteers by demonstrating work methods and ensuring they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
  • Ensure divisional/territorial standards are followed by all volunteers.
  • Assist in the development of strategies and recommendations for food bank volunteer development.

Seasonal / Special Programs

  • Assist in the organization, planning and delivery of seasonal and special programs such as Christmas assistance, kettles, food drives, backpacks, community lunch, and other CS programs as required.

Administration

  • Receive calls for food bank intake appointments and inquiries regarding CS programs
  • Maintain accurate records of donated goods (non-monetary) and report accordingly to TSA, Feed Ontario, Food Banks Canada (FBC) and other partners as appropriate. This includes ensuring compliance with FBC National Standards of Excellence.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained in accordance with Operating Policy and applicable legislation.

Health and Safety

  • Assist in ensuring client and volunteer safety by maintaining cleanliness and adherence to all health and safety standards.
  • Ensure that the food bank areas are maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY Perform other position related duties as required.

  • Reports directly to: Corps Officer or designate.
  • Direct reports for this position: there are no direct reports for this position.
  • This role is that of an independent worker and part of a team; generally, works alongside with those supervised.
  • Provide in-scope supervision and advice to new staff, students and up to 10 food bank volunteers, which may fluctuate from day to day and week to week within established guidelines and operational requirements.

Financial And Materials Management

  • Ensure that TSA financial policies and procedures are followed for the safe/secure handling of any CS monetary donations.
  • Oversee food bank materials management such as donations/product flow and distribution of same.

Working Conditions

  • This is a regular part-time position based on 26 hours per week.
  • The performance of the job requires the ability to lift/move 30 lbs. with no assistance from others, reach, bend, twist, and stoop frequently, work in a standing or sitting position for long periods, un-packing delivery vehicles, and computer keyboarding.
  • May be exposed to disagreeable people including the occasional angry and/or abusive client/public, working with people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Normal hours of work : 9:30a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Flexibility in scheduling is required as some weekend and evening work may be required. Additional hours and modification to the working schedule may be needed during peak seasons (ie. Christmas).

The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. Education, Experience, Qualifications, Certifications, Skills Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in human services or equivalent in related field. i.e. Social Services Worker is an asset
  • Ability and/or willingness to provide a Safe Food Handlers Certification.

Experience And Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience is an asset
  • Have a keen interest in the social services sector and a desire to see lives transformed.
  • Possess a genuine concern for and interest in the marginalization of society.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Hands-on experience and human services experience working with marginalized individuals is required.
  • Proficient in a computerized environment; must have strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Some knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
