We have an immediate opening for a full-time Analytical Chemist. This position reports directly to the Maintenance and Engineering Manager and is based at our Prince George, BC location. This position offers an attractive salary, benefits and pension program. Relocation assistance may be available for outstanding candidates.

THE POSITION

As an Analytical Chemist, you are responsible for chemistry work conducted at the Prince George facility. This includes: R&D work, weekly operational testing, raw material and finished product testing, lab trials, plant trials support, regulatory testing, and customer complaint investigations. As the analytical chemist, you are responsible for maintaining and developing testing aparatuses and methodology, as well as monitoring in-process chemistry and recommending changes/modifications derived from process troubleshooting with respect to the chemistry. You will additionally ensure the reliability and accuracy of analytical procedures and be a key contributor to the site ISO9001 Quality system, ensuring compliance with, and effectiveness of, standard operating procedures related to process chemistry and chemical analysis

In laboratory: Exposures to chemicals, raw materials, and finished products necessary in the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide. Exposure to the elements (temperature extremes, rain, snow etc.). Personal protective equipment is worn as appropriate for plant areas and job tasks.

Schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week. Schedule can be flexible if mutually agreed upon.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • 3-5+ years chemical plant experience in related activities preferred
  • 2+ years hydrogen peroxide or related chemistries experience preferred
  • Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) certification and or Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification preferred

POSITON DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safety, Health, Environmental

    • Adhere to and perform work tasks in a manner which complies with all plant safety rules, policies, standard operating/inspection procedures and to encourage others to do the same in order to protect the safety and health of all team members
    • Maintain compliance with all internal and regulatory safety and environmental standards, including compliance with Responsible Care Codes of Practice and Mandatory Safety Standards
    • Maintain safe and environmentally acceptable working conditions in laboratory area
    • Transfer knowledge through training sessions and daily interaction with the site personnel
  • Laboratory

    • Keeping abreast of new technological developments in the field of analytical chemistry and implementing those which improve accuracy, precision, safety, environmental, or overall efficiency
    • Investigate special product related customer needs including new or modified chemical formulations
    • Coordinate plant, laboratory, Research and Development support requirements to develop new or modified products; this may include creating new analytical testing apparatuses & methodology
    • Recommend chemical process modifications based on interpretation of analytical results
    • Assist with analytical testing and other lab procedures with other lab personnel to ensure timely and accurate evaluation of raw materials, in-process materials, product quality, and other customer requirements per established procedures outlined in the Plant Laboratory Procedures Manual
    • Ensure that any new material does not present undue safety, health, process, or environmental risk
    • Maintain a system to ensure SDS's are current and available as per WHMIS legislation
    • Investigate and resolve customer complaints as pertains to laboratory analysis
    • Maintaining a wide range of laboratory services and equipment including, ICP, GC, HPLC, MP, Karl Fischer, densiometers, TOC, and general lab equipment
    • Maintain Laboratory Analytical Methods
  • Quality Assurance

    • Monitor incoming raw materials that might impact quality such that specifications and quality assurance methods are maintained, ensure new suppliers are qualified through the management of change process
    • Manage site ISO / Responsible Care procedures and practices with respect to the lab
    • Review proposed process changes to ensure chemical and product quality impact is understood
    • Maintain the master Purchasing Specifications for key raw materials
    • Approve raw material and maintain records of inspection and tests conducted on the raw materials
    • Verify the quality, test, record, and report on in-process and finished product samples
    • Maintain and calibrate test and measuring equipment, document results and take appropriate corrective actions as required
    • Maintain calibration programs and/or design calibration programs for new equipment
