About the role

The opportunity The Director of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) Compliance will be part of a global team to help manage and support all AI matters, including other related disciplines, for the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan including six key functions of the Compliance Operating Model: i) Advisory, ii) Policies and Procedures iii) Education and Training, iv) Monitoring and Surveillance, v) Compliance Risk Management, vi) Compliance Reporting to Senior Management and the Board.

As AI becomes more incorporated into Teachers’ enterprise strategy and operations, it is crucial to prioritize responsible AI practices. This role will primarily focus on considering new risks that differ from traditional technology risks and facilitating the integration of responsible AI tools and platforms. Although the role’s mandate will be to facilitate AI enablement and ensure responsible AI, AI risk management, and regulatory compliance throughout the enterprise, it will also help drive innovation and enablement of AI across Corporate Affairs to enhance operational efficiency. This role will also focus on promoting both enablement and compliance in alignment with broader business transformation goals and act as an interconnected agent to help achieve this.

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise, risk management/regulatory experience and strong relationship management skills, enabling effective collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders.

Who You'll Work With The Compliance Department’s vision is to be a trusted partner and advisor to help Teachers’ global business lines execute on business-specific AI priorities, effectively manage risk, regulatory compliance and related best practices in accordance with Teachers’ risk tolerance, and to help build a sustainable culture of compliance. You will work as part of Corporate Affairs and work with teams across all divisions at Teachers'.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary compliance advisor on AI-related issues, including regulations, ethical considerations, and emerging risks.
  • Provide guidance on AI system design, deployment, usage, and integration with responsible AI frameworks.
  • Develop governance processes, controls, and metrics for AI/ML to ensure effective risk management.
  • Lead the development and management of the AI Compliance Program and AI Governance Framework.
  • Define and implement policies and procedures for ethical AI practices.
  • Promote understanding of AI risks and compliance obligations through targeted training and awareness programs.
  • Establish oversight processes for AI activities, including model governance and bias detection.
  • Partner with data science, IT, and internal audit teams to review AI models for compliance.
  • Conduct AI risk management activities and integrate them into the enterprise risk management framework.
  • Prepare AI compliance reports for senior management and the Board.
  • Support the execution of the organization's AI strategy and identify opportunities for leveraging AI for competitive advantage.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on AI-related investment risks and monitor emerging legal, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Represent the organization in industry forums and panels as a thought leader in AI compliance.

What You'll Need

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant progressive experience in compliance, risk management, legal or model governance.
  • Degree in relevant field which could include areas such as business administration, computer or data science or related discipline is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge with AI technologies, ML/AI and/or expert with AI risk management best practices.
  • Proven experience with translating global AI regulations into corporate governance
  • Advanced understanding of data privacy principles, and global regulatory and legal obligations.
  • Knowledge of algorithms, ex., rule-based systems, linear/logistic regressions, and strong understanding of IT and data management systems.
  • Knowledge in and the ability to apply the principles of change management and project management with the proven ability to manage change, ambiguity and lead projects.
  • Curious and proactive learner interested in new technology, ML/AI risk management best practices, trends and developments in data and AI governance.
  • Experience in developing policies and conducting training programs.
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis management and excellent client service.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in providing excellent client service and partnering with peers.
