About the role

Ottawa, Ontario | Hybrid | 2–5 Year Call

At Navio Law, we believe lawyers should do more than identify risks.

Our clients are founders, innovators, and executives that need practical advice to help them make decisions and move forward. They are looking for lawyers who understand both the legal issues and the business realities behind them.

We're looking for a Business Lawyer with 2–5 years of experience who enjoys solving problems, building relationships, and helping businesses navigate growth. Most of your work will focus on commercial contracts, privacy matters, and advising businesses on day-to-day legal issues. You'll also have opportunities to expand your experience in employment and corporate law.

This role is ideal for someone who wants more responsibility and direct client interaction. You'll work directly with clients, take ownership of your files, and have a seat at the table as we redefine what a progressive legal practice looks like.

About Navio Law

Navio Law is a modern business law firm serving entrepreneurs, technology companies, startups, life sciences companies and growing businesses across Canada.

We combine practical legal advice with innovative systems, technology, and processes to provide a better client experience. We believe great lawyers should be trusted advisors, not just document drafters. Our team values curiosity, ownership, collaboration, continuous improvement, and a willingness to challenge traditional ways of working.

What You'll Do

Commercial Contracts & Technology Transactions

Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on a broad range of commercial agreements including SaaS, software licensing, consulting, reseller, procurement, and other technology-related contracts. Advise clients on commercial risk allocation and contract strategy. Identify practical solutions that support clients' business objectives. Review, interpret, and advise on existing contractual arrangements. Develop and maintain contract precedents, playbooks, and knowledge resources. Support clients with procurement, vendor, customer, partnership, and strategic commercial relationships.

Privacy & Data Governance

Advise clients on Canadian privacy law compliance requirements. Draft and review privacy policies, consent language, and data governance documentation. Support clients in developing privacy compliance programs and practices. Assist with privacy impact assessments and privacy-related risk assessments. Monitor developments in privacy, cybersecurity, AI, and technology regulation and communicate practical implications to clients. Assist clients in responding to privacy incidents and regulatory inquiries where required.

Corporate & Business Advisory

Support incorporations, reorganizations, corporate maintenance, and governance matters. Assist with financings, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic transactions. Draft shareholder agreements and related governance documents. Participate in legal due diligence and transaction support work. Collaborate with senior lawyers on more complex corporate matters. Work closely with founders, executives, and business leaders on strategic legal questions. Help clients build scalable legal and governance frameworks as they grow.

Fractional General Counsel Support

Act as a trusted external legal advisor to growing businesses. Participate in strategic discussions with founders and leadership teams. Help clients achieve their business objectives while managing legal risk. Develop a deep understanding of client operations, priorities, and growth plans. Build long-term advisory relationships with clients.

Client Relationship Management

Serve as a primary point of contact for clients as assigned by Founders. Lead client meetings and manage client communications. Translate complex legal issues into practical business advice. Manage client expectations and project timelines. Identify proactive opportunities to support client success.

Innovation & Practice Development

Help improve how legal services are delivered. Contribute to process design, automation, and knowledge management initiatives. Explore opportunities to leverage technology and AI tools responsibly and effectively. Help develop templates, workflows, and legal products. Participate in educational content, thought leadership, speaking engagements, or business development initiatives where interested. Contribute ideas that help shape the future of the firm and the legal profession.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario. 2–5 years of post-call experience. Experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational and project management abilities. Ability to manage files independently and take ownership of outcomes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience advising technology companies and working with founders, startups, or growth-stage businesses. Privacy law experience. Employment law experience. Corporate law experience. Interest in legal issues relating to technology, AI, privacy, and the future of the legal profession.

You’ll Thrive Here If You

Enjoy taking ownership of your work. Like working directly with clients. Are comfortable making recommendations and exercising judgment. Think beyond legal risks and focus on practical solutions. Are entrepreneurial and proactive. Embrace technology and continuous improvement. Want to help redefine what modern legal practice looks like. Enjoy learning new areas of law and business.

This May Not Be The Right Fit If You

Prefer highly structured environments with multiple layers of review and approval. Need detailed instructions before taking action. View your role primarily as identifying risks and legal analysis rather than solving problems and driving client outcomes. Are uncomfortable with change, innovation, or new technologies.

Why Join Navio Law? Early client ownership and responsibility. Direct access to founders, executives, and business leaders.

A chance to help shape the future of legal services.
