Position Summary
The Instructional Designer will use instructional design and project management skills to support the design and development of online learning modules and open resources that support the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) project. This includes creating flexible, learner-centered content that supports faculty in their understanding of RPL. The incumbent collaborates closely with Subject Matter Experts, Project coordinator, Quality Assurance Specialists, and faculty to ensure that RPL modules align with Loyalist’s academic standards and are delivered on time. Working both independently and as part of a cross-functional team, the Instructional Designer ensures that the learning experiences are accessible, high-quality, and tailored to diverse learner needs. The incumbent makes recommendations regarding instructional design; implements sound instructional design principles and develops instruction to address various learner profiles using established quality frameworks. The incumbent manages multiple projects with shifting priorities and timelines related to the above-described responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with subject matter experts (primarily faculty), and Project Coordinator, to design online courses that are active and engaging.
- Applies expertise in pedagogy and consults with Project Coordinator on the creation of effective learning outcomes, online teaching strategies, learning activities and tasks, and assessment strategies
- Provides guidance and assists subject matter experts with preparing course material for online delivery
- Designs instructional content based on information provided by the subject matter expert and the capabilities of Canvas Loyalist’s Learning Management System (LMS)
- Applies instructional design principles that comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements
- Ensures courses meet quality standards as outlined in the Quality Matters and QA
- Advises SME on the effective application of educational multimedia, learning objects, and other technology tools to enhance instruction
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of a three (3) year or four (4) year degreein Education, Instructional Design, eLearning/Distance Education, Communications or related field of study, or an equivalent combination of a degree plus a certificate in Adult Learning, eLearning, Learning Technologies or Instructional Design
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a post-secondary environment
- Minimum 2 years experience with Instructional Design and/or Development
- Experience applying learning technologies in an educational space
- Experience with creating, developing and maintaining learning content for an e-learning environment.
- Experience in course design and development based on best practices, including developing instructional design plans and guiding the development of learning outcomes, course outlines, learning activities, and assessment instruments.
- Experience in implementing sound instructional design principles, develop instruction to address various learner profiles, manage multiple projects with their shifting priorities and timelines, and prepare clear instructional material
- Proven understanding of learning technology uses and transferability and applicability to an academic environment.
- Proficiency using MS Word and Excel, as well as with a learning management system is required and experience using course authoring and/or assessment tools for learning system are preferred
- Superior organizational and communication skills; excellent writing skills
- Experience to carry out both short and long-term projects with minimum supervision
- Experience working with a diverse population and rapidly changing circumstances
- A thorough understanding of the principles of adult education
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
