Job Title: ESL Instructor
Location: Gander, NL
Position Type: 1 full-time position until March 31, 2026 with possibility of extension pending budget availability and satisfactory performance
Closing date: Until filled
Reporting to the Director of Language Services, the ESL Instructoris responsible for providing ESL instruction to clients who qualify for the service with the ANC.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Planning
-
Prepare courses for delivery to clients according to approved curriculum and teaching methodologies
-
Prepare and administer client needs assessments that identify individual or group needs for the purposes of planning
Instructional
- Instruct clients using a variety of modern teaching strategies, including:
-
portfolio-based assessment
-
task-based planning and instruction
-
individualized instructional planning
-
differentiation of curriculum
-
cooperative learning
-
technology integration
-
other strategies where required
-
Assessment
-
Prepare and administer regular assessments, both formative and summative, according to the established guidelines
-
Administer and grade assessments using Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test standards
Administration
-
Prepare and submit progress and summary reports
-
Maintain and report statistics for quarterly and annual reporting in compliance with the stakeholder agreement
-
Provide curriculum planning documentation upon request
-
Participate in staff meetings, educational conferences and professional learning
-
Represent the Association, when required, on committees, boards and working groups
-
Work with volunteers assigned to a client or the classroom
-
Complete other tasks related to the position as assigned
Qualifications and Experience:
-
Bachelor of Education, TESL/TEFL Designation with a minimum of 1 year experience (relevant equivalencies and education may be considered)
-
Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) training and Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) training considered an asset but not essential
-
Skilled in supporting new Canadians in a working environment promoting cultural awareness and sensitivity for a diverse client group
-
Experience in ESL planning, delivery, and assessment
-
Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility to address the changing needs of the environment and client group
-
Excellent communication skills - written and oral
-
Precise attention to detail in report writing and compliance requirements
-
Demonstrated experience in the use of MS Office suite of programs
-
Proven utilization of technologies in the classroom for teaching and learning
Conditions of Employment:

Legal authorization to work in Canada
-
Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm)
-
Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
