We are currently looking for a Distribution Planning Engineer to join our System Planning team in a permanent position.

This position is responsible for all aspects of distribution planning, including system studies related to generation interconnections, large load connections, reliability studies, and load growth. The Distribution Planning Engineer will become an expert in CYME distribution analysis software and help develop and maintain network and load models. Analysis provided by the Distribution Planning Engineer will inform operational, capital, and regulatory decisions.

Key Elements Of This Role Include

  • Performing preliminary assessments and system impact studies for large loads and distributed generation.
  • Developing annual system load snapshot and feeder assessment reports.
  • Conducting area planning studies in response to regional engineering requests and metrics related to load growth and asset risk.
  • Performing system fault level calculations and device coordination for distribution protection analysis.
  • Updating and enhancing the CYME software database using GIS and equipment data.
  • Leveraging data from AMI, MV90, PI, and GE APM using tools such as PI Vision, PI Datalink, Tableau, Python, and Excel.
  • Collaborating closely with regional engineering and capital execution teams to develop planning recommendations and implementation timelines.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Contributing to a respectful, safety-focused work environment grounded in mutual trust.

You will be responsible for personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.  You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environment management system processes and initiatives.

These Skills Will Make You Successful To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills:

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and experience working in electrical utility or industrial medium voltage applications.
  • You are a professional member of Engineers Nova Scotia or are eligible and committed to obtaining membership within six months of starting the position.
  • You hold a valid driver’s license.
  • You are proficient in using a variety of software tools, including CYME, PI, Word, Excel, Python and Tableau.
  • You are prepared to tackle the evolving challenges facing the distribution system, including renewable generation and the electrification of heating and transportation, and are ready to leverage new data sources to evolve traditional planning methods.
  • You have strong communication skills and collaborate effectively within System Planning and with other departments to ensure system studies are thorough and accurate.
  • You can clearly and confidently communicate study recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • You build strong relationships and establish credibility through your work.
  • You have strong technical writing skills, with experience preparing clear, detailed reports.
  • You work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • You are a self-starter with strong organizational and analytical skills and have experience managing multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • You are committed to your ongoing personal and professional development.
  • You are available to travel as required.
  • You are also available to support emergency power restoration efforts in an assigned storm role, which may differ from your regular position.

We provide 95 per cent of the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Nova Scotia, and serve over 500,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers across the province.

Our 1,700 dedicated, safety-focused employees help manage $5 billion worth of generation, transmission and distribution assets and produce more than 10,000 gigawatt hours of electricity each year.
