More specifically, the scope of your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Supports large deal origination in Markets, CRE and Agriculture. Partnering with members of the sales team to collaborate on large deal origination, structuring, and pricing and to facilitate sell-down of larger deals as required to meet the organizations capital ratio objectives, SMART growth principles and portfolio composition aims.
  • Designs, negotiates, and submits comprehensive, fully reasoned credit applications in accordance with Servus Credit Union's policies, procedures, risk appetite, and regulatory guidelines, ensuring a high quality of proactive risk assessment, credit structure, due diligence, and overall presentation.
  • Manages the overall syndications portfolio with strategic oversight to target composition, pricing, structure, and risk. Proactively identifies potential risk situations within the syndicate portfolio and makes recommendations and/or escalates to management as required. Works collaboratively across teams, through origination or sell-down mechanisms, to assist in the improvement of risk weighted assets and the overall lending portfolio profitability, composition, and risk profile.
  • Deepens relationships with existing syndicated lending partners and identifies and cultivates new partnerships to expand SCU’s syndicate reputation in market and to ensure breadth of available avenues for capital recovery and deployment, as well as revenue generation and value creation.
  • Contributes actively to the growth, revenue, and value creation objectives of the organization.
  • As guided by the business plan, supports strategic diversification of the lending portfolio through acquisition of profitable loans via agreed third party / broker partners. Seeks out and reviews inbound syndication opportunities, recommending these for execution as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with SCU’s syndicate partners, commercial credit, and legal council as required, coordinates and drafts, servicing, inter-lender, and participation agreements to be executed in support of outbound syndications where required.
  • Completes reviews for syndicate accounts; obtains necessary supporting documentation for outbound syndications and ensures these are delivered to our participants; obtains necessary reviews and supporting documentation from internal teams for inbound syndications and ensures these are delivered to the appropriate team.
  • Works collaboratively with the Operational Support and Credit team to engage analysts for comprehensive file review and assessment as required.
  • Prepares regular reports on the status and performance of the syndicate portfolio.
  • Works collaboratively with the Treasury and Finance team to support achievement of the organization’s capital ratio targets, facilitating securitization, pools and syndication sell-downs in the Retail, Markets, CRE and Ag portfolios as required.
  • Assists treasury in proactive capital forecasting by supporting sales pipeline reporting.
  • Cultivates and maintains a specialist understanding of associated regulatory and compliance requirements as set forth by the organization and its external regulator, and ensure recommendations and file structures are adherent.
  • Establishes highly collaborative working relationships within Credit and Risk, Finance, and Member Experience – cultivating inclusive and solutions-oriented relationships across the organization.
  • Monitors and identifies industry trends and emerging issues and recommend action to both capitalize on opportunities and effectively manage evolving risks.

Experience And/or Educational Requirements:

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in commercial banking.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience underwriting sophisticated and complex credit deals.
  • 2+ years’ experience in a finance/treasury environment considered an asset
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of a range of financial products including fixed income, equity, credit, commodities, and derivative financial products.
  • Knowledge of financial markets and regulatory oversight bodies.
  • CFA, MBA, or CPA considered an asset.
  • Completed a relevant certificate, diploma, degree or designation program.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Strong knowledge of departmental systems and applications supporting a range of financial products.
  • In depth knowledge of financial institutions and the terminology used.
  • Ability to effectively and creatively structure complex deals while staying within applicable parameters.
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user friendly language to a variety of audiences, including executive and board members, as required.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
