Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Grounds Custodian for a Full-Time Continuing opportunity with the Landscaping & Grounds department.
The Grounds Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of university grounds, outdoor spaces, and surrounding facilities. This role plays a key part in creating a welcoming and well-maintained campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform daily cleaning and upkeep of outdoor areas, including sidewalks, entryways, stairwells, courtyards, and common areas;
- Sweep, blow, pressure wash, or hose down walkways and exterior surfaces as needed;
- Follow established safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE);
- Identify and report to supervisor unsafe conditions such as damaged or uneven sidewalks, broken benches, exposed utilities and lighting outages, or hazardous debris;
- Support event setups and tear-downs for outdoor university functions (e.g., setting up outdoor furniture, barricades, trash bins);
- Provide grounds support for construction or maintenance crews when needed; and
- Safely operate groundskeeping tools such as leaf blowers, pressure washers, hand tools, carts, and sweepers.

SKILLS
You will have:
- The ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, bending, stooping, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of grounds tools and safety procedures.
- The ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of one year of experience performing groundskeeping, landscaping, outdoor custodial or maintenance work, facilities support involving physical labor.
- Experience must include the use of basic grounds tools and equipment, such as leaf blowers, rakes, brooms, shovels, trash collection tools and carts.
- Prior experience in a university, school district, hospital, government, or large public facility setting is an asset.
- Familiarity with seasonal grounds tasks, such as snow/ice removal, fall leaf cleanup, spring mulching or planting is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
