What you can expect from this position:
Reporting to the Manager, Baggage Operations, this position is responsible for the efficient operation of the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 Baggage handling systems and to ensure all processes and SOPs within Baggage Services are executed successfully at Toronto Pearson. This role will assist with maintaining the flow of inbound, outbound and connecting baggage and provide field level oversight and support to airlines, ground handlers and passengers.
As a Baggage System Operator**,** you will:
- Monitor the T1 and T3 Baggage Handling System (BHS) and clear baggage jams and faults as required.
- Monitor and respond to radio call out from the Control Room.
- Responsible for the monitoring and operation of all SSBD, SAC and SCADA processes.
- Oversight of Bag rooms, Roadway management, including induction points and BIWIS, ITD and Connections.
- Monitor Baggage Inbound/Outbound Lateral and Carousel allocations and ensure efficiency of planned allocation.
- Field level monitoring of ITD, BIWIS and other Baggage program-related processes and baggage flow.
- Ensure timely Tub stock at SSBDs, departures level, inbound and connection induction areas to support efficient baggage hygiene needs.
- Conduct T1 and T3 BHS inspections including Foreign Object Debris (FOD) inspections and removal.
- Liaise with the CATSA Point Leader on the status of equipment, and processing times at HBS and recon rooms.
- Liaise with various partners including ground handlers and Airlines and respond to baggage operational situations that may cause disruption on baggage flow and/ or damage to BHS equipment.
- Oversight of 3rd party contractors (Manual Encode operations, ITT, Common Handler).
- Conduct Service Level Agreement audits as it relates to baggage operations.
- Field level configuration of the conveyors in the event of a breakdown, system congestion, or to improve efficiencies of flow.
- Implementation and oversight of baggage-related IRROPS plans and contingencies on a field-level basis.
This unionized position is classified at the Band 5 level, with an hourly wage of $40.17, based on a 40 hour work week. As part of the competitive process, you will be required to complete a practical test.
This is the role for you, if you have:
- 1+ years’ customer service experience.
- 2-3 years’ experience in an airport environment an asset.
- Required to obtain a “D/A” class AVOP permit within thirty (30) days of appointment to the position.
- High school diploma is required.
- Ability to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance at the designated level for the position.
Knowledge and skills you bring, that set-you up for success:
- Ability to lift objects up to 35 kilograms and will be capable of working in restrictive spaces and undertaking strenuous activities such as climbing ladders, lifting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment.
- Able to multitask and make decisions that support the inbound and outbound, flow of baggage and Airline performance.
- Must be adaptable and show a mature approach and resourcefulness in dealing with conflict and pressure situations.
- Competent with data entry and report creation.
- Able to influence Airline / Ground Handler decisions to facilitate a higher level of service and overall performance.
- Ability to learn various types of baggage system equipment with varying complexities from different vendors, i.e., Alstef, Vanderlande, WEBB, Beumer and DSG.
- Knowledge of computer applications, i.e., MS Office applications, SmartSuite Enterprise and applied SAC and SCADA.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to interpret Airline schedules and bag data.
- Understanding of ITD, BIWIS, ITT and baggage-related programs and processes, contingencies and regulatory requirements.
- Able to multitask with time constraints and make decisions that support the, inbound and outbound, flow of baggage and Airline performance.
- Knowledge of baggage flow process at Pearson airport.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work rotational shift work.
