The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland is North America’s most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response and technology transfer in support of oceans industries.

The Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) is an applied research unit within the School of Fisheries. The Centre’s main areas of focus are Conservation Engineering, Fishing Gear Design and Testing, Fisheries Development, and Biological Assessment of Emerging Species. The Centre operates the world’s largest flume tank (22 meter) dedicated to hydrodynamic testing as well as utilizes research vessels and commercial fishing vessels to conduct at-sea experiments. Full scale at-sea testing is conducted using experimental fishing gears, electronic monitoring systems, a remote operated vehicle, deep-sea underwater cameras, and other related equipment.

DUTIES

The successful applicant will coordinate and lead an ongoing applied research project dedicated to reducing risk of seabird bycatch in inshore Newfoundland fisheries. Duties include project administration, liaising with industrial clients; operating and maintaining technical equipment; at-sea data collection, analysis of data, biological sampling, report writing, individually or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS Experience (3-5 years) conducting industrially relevant applied research on seabird bycatch reduction using different fishing gears. At-sea experience on commercial fishing vessels; graduation with a Bachelor of Science with an emphasis on fisheries or biological science; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. The successful applicant will also work closely with industrial clients and have experience in statistical analysis and technical report writing. Strong organizational, interpersonal and writing skills are required. Possession of a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the ability to work in the field and at-sea are also required.

SALARY:$58,722 to $76,259 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel IV, NAPE Local 7405)
