About the role
R.W. Tomlinson is seeking a Scale Attendant to support the controlled receiving of excess soil, in full compliance with the Ontario Excess Soil Regulation (O. Reg. 406/19) and applicable site-specific acceptance criteria.
The successful candidate will be responsible for operating the scale using APEX software, verifying that all regulatory and site soil receiving requirements are satisfied prior to acceptance, and directing haul drivers to the appropriate designated deposit areas within the site.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Scale Operations & Documentation
- Operate truck scales using APEX scale software to accurately record incoming loads.
- Capture and verify load information including vehicle details, material type, volume/weight, source site information, and documentation references.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and organized scale records in accordance with regulatory and site requirements.
Excess Soil Compliance
- Confirm that incoming soil loads meet Ontario Excess Soil Regulation requirements prior to acceptance.
- Verify excess soil tracking documentation, source site identification, and site-specific acceptance criteria.
- Refuse non-compliant loads and follow established escalation procedures.
- Communicate compliance issues promptly to site supervision or management.
Site Coordination & Traffic Control
- Direct drivers to designated soil deposit areas in accordance with site plans and operational needs.
- Coordinate with site staff to ensure proper placement and safe truck movements.
Communication & Administration

Communicate professionally with drivers, site staff, and supervisors.

Assist with audits, inspections, and regulatory inquiries related to excess soil receiving.

Follow all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required
- Experience as a scale attendant, weighmaster, or similar role in a regulated environment.
- Working knowledge of Ontario Excess Soil Regulation (O. Reg. 406/19).
- Experience using APEX scale software or similar systems.
- Strong attention to detail and compliance-focused decision-making.
- Effective communication skills and basic computer proficiency.
Preferred

Experience at an excess soil reuse, landfill, or regulated soil receiving site.

Familiarity with environmental compliance and soil acceptance criteria.

Knowledge of health and safety requirements in industrial or construction environments.
WORKING CONDITIONS
-
Work primarily in a scale house environment.

Regular interaction with truck drivers and site operations staff.

Exposure to an active industrial site with vehicle and equipment traffic.

Shift work and hours may change based on project requirements.
COMPENSATION INFORMATION
The expected salary range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00 hourly. Placement within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including qualifications and experience.
