Join a team that relies on data to improve programs and outcomes across the province. As the Data Science Lead, you'll provide expert guidance, develop analytics capabilities, and support teams in using data, research, and tools to plan effectively and make informed decisions.
About the job
As a Data Science Lead, you will:
- Lead advanced data science work, including building models and developing analytics that support evidence-based decision-making.
- Design methods to capture, structure, and transform data, and develop tools and dashboards that make insights easy to understand and use.
- Provide guidance and technical leadership to build data science and analytics capacity across teams.
- Work with partners and stakeholders to translate analytics into clear, actionable insights that support planning, policy, and program development.
- Lead strategic data initiatives, projects, and consultations that advance the Ministry's data science strategy and improve analytical practices.
What you bring to the team
Data Science & Analytical Expertise:
You use your deep technical skills to turn complex data into meaningful insights.
- Experience applying statistical and data science methods for descriptive, exploratory, and predictive analytics.
- Knowledge of supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques.
- Strong understanding of the math behind statistical and modelling approaches.
- Ability to balance high-level thinking with careful attention to detail.
- Familiarity with public-sector policy, research, and program development.
Project Management and Technical Leadership
You know how to manage projects and use the right tools to get the job done.
- Experience working on and leading complex projects with diverse teams and priorities
- Familiarity with project management approaches such as Agile, Scrum or Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)
- Skill in coordinating multiple projects at the same time to successful completion.
- Expertise with data science tools and programming language (e.g., Python, R) for modelling and analysis.
- Experience using cloud-based analytics platforms such as Databricks or RStudio.
- Understanding of data management principles and best practices for large or varied datasets.
- Knowledge of software engineering concepts as they apply to deploying data science models.
Team Leadership & Strategic Thinking
You lead with purpose and help others grow.
- Experience mentoring and coaching colleagues on analytics and data science work.
- Ability to advise senior leaders on planning, capacity-building, and portfolio direction.
- Skill in leading technical teams and supporting collaboration
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to question assumptions.
- Creative thinker who uses data to explore new solutions
Communication and Collaboration
You can explain complex ideas clearly and work effectively with partners.
- Ability to tell a clear story with data through visuals and different communication formats.
- Experience translating complex technical information for non-technical audiences.
- Strong consultation and relationship-building skills with internal and external partners.
- Ability to influence others and build consensus around priorities.
- Comfortable managing sensitive issues and helping teams align on decisions
