Principal Mapping Designer – Pipeline Systems

Purpose of the Role

The Principal Mapping Designer plays a critical leadership role in delivering high‑quality pipeline mapping and design solutions across complex upstream, midstream, and distribution projects. This role is responsible for producing and overseeing technically accurate, constructible, and compliant deliverables while providing technical leadership, mentorship, and subject matter expertise across the mapping discipline.

The role also includes periodic field involvement to support data collection, validate design assumptions, and review constructed work for alignment with approved design packages.

In addition to individual technical contributions, this role serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for pipeline mapping, supporting multidisciplinary teams and mentoring less‑experienced designers.

Aligned with Worley’s purpose of delivering sustainable, safe, and innovative project outcomes, this position contributes to the successful execution of major pipeline programs through technical excellence, collaboration, and a strong commitment to health, safety, and quality.

Key Responsibilities

· Serve as the design manager on large‑scale projects with minimal supervision.

· Accountable for the completion and technical integrity of mapping deliverables, which may include:

· Strip maps

· Alignment sheets

· Crossing drawings

· Permit drawings

· Land and right‑of‑way exhibits

· Construction typicals

· Simple piping assembly drawings

· Hydrotest plan drawings

  • Perform advanced pipeline mapping and design using Autodesk Civil 3D (required and primary tool).
  • Utilize Skyline and ArcGIS platforms as secondary tools; experience with these platforms is advantageous.
  • Contribute to project scope development during proposal and pursuit phases.
  • Assess and advise on scope changes, including impacts to constructability, schedule, and budget.
  • Coordinate with clients, survey teams, and construction partners to support route selection and pipeline development.
  • Lead and manage mapping scope, supporting schedule and cost control objectives.
  • Facilitate internal and external route reviews and construction coordination meetings to gain client approval.
  • Lead, review, and approve work produced by junior designers to ensure technical quality and alignment with project objectives.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers and other disciplines (civil, piping, environmental, etc.) to deliver integrated designs.
  • Present pipeline routing and mapping deliverables to clients and internal stakeholders via Microsoft Teams and in‑person meetings.
  • Operate effectively in a fast‑paced environment with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Champion Worley’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) culture across all project activities.
  • Balance leadership contributions on large programs with flexibility to support multiple smaller studies or projects concurrently.
  • Apply creative and critical thinking to solve complex technical challenges and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • Provide informal supervision, coaching, and technical guidance to junior team members. Ensure all deliverables comply with Worley’s quality systems, standards, and procedures.

Qualifications / Skill Set

  • Minimum 12 years of experience in pipeline mapping and design for upstream, midstream, or distribution systems.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D (2018 or newer) in a pipeline design environment.

  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS, associated GIS database formats, and geospatial data workflows.

  • Experience with Skyline and Microsoft Access is considered an asset.

  • Strong understanding of survey data, interpretation, and processing.

  • Working knowledge of civil grading and drainage principles (preferred).

  • Experience supporting upstream or gathering pipeline projects is an advantage.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.

  • Strong commitment to technical accuracy, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities with sound engineering judgment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Positive, flexible, and adaptable mindset with a result-oriented approach.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new tools, technologies, and project environments.

  • Effective team contributor with the ability to work independently when required.

  • Proactive, motivated, and self‑directed with a strong sense of ownership.

For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is $136,536 to $184,725.

Application of the pay band: Variation in salary is determined by factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
