Please note that Sunday hours and assignments are subject to change. TPL reserves the right to modify or cancel Sunday hours.

DATES OF WORK:
Sunday Library Service will be offered for the session: October 19, 2025 – April 26, 2026 (Excluding the following dates: December 28, 2025, and April 5, 2026)

HOURS OF WORK:
Regular Sunday hours: October 19, 2025 – April 26, 2026
12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Supervisory/In Charge staff in the Branch/Department Head, Assistant Branch/Department Head, Senior Branch Head/Senior Department Head, Assistant Department Head, Librarian, Operations Supervisor, Senior Library Assistant classifications will be required to work either 11:45am-4:45pm OR 12:15pm to 5:15pm (with some exceptions).

BRANCH CLOSURE:
Staff assigned to branches that close during the Sunday session for State of Good Repair (SOGR) projects will be assigned to work at an alternate location.

PROGRAMMING:
Staff positions with Programming in their job description (e.g. Library Assistant, Senior Library Assistant, Librarian, Digital Design Technician, and Branch/Department Head) may be called on to offer library programs. To support staff who are assigned to one of these positions and have no experience in programming, training will be available.

  • Staff responsible for delivering programming on Sundays will be required to provide a current Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check

TRAINING:
Orientation is required and will be scheduled from August 24 – October 5, 2025. Programming training is available to those who have no programming experience.

PAYMENT:
Employees who work on Sundays shall be paid a premium for all hours worked of $5.00 per hour.

Job Description

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, to perform duties related to the circulation of books and library materials, to perform caretaking and maintenance duties, and other related duties as may be assigned.

DUTIES:

Typical duties of this position are:

  • charge out books and other library material and equipment; take them when returned,
  • check for fines or fees due, collect and record them; check for items that are reserved, set them
  • aside and notify patrons that they are ready
  • shelve books, service and return films, records, or other library material or equipment to
  • their appropriate shelves or storage spots, and maintain shelves in order
  • register borrowers and make out identification cards
  • maintain appropriate files and other records
  • assist with enquiries relating to library materials and rules and regulations. This may
  • involve enquiries by patrons in the library or by telephone, telephone equipment for aiding
  • hearing impaired patrons, computers or other devices as used in or by the Library
  • assist in maintenance and repair of library materials
  • assist in the telecommunication operation
  • load, unload, pack and unpack books, furniture and equipment and move them to their proper locations in or around the building
  • assist in maintaining order and guarding building or equipment
  • unlock and lock building before and after service hours and as required
  • check controls on building equipment as required; check and advise when oil or other supplies must be ordered as necessary
  • make repairs, change light bulbs, etc., as necessary
  • operate audio-visual equipment
  • keep grounds neat and clean, and snow cleared from walks and drives as required
  • come in at odd hours in the event of emergency
  • drive, make delivery and pick up as necessary
  • perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Understanding and appreciation of the philosophy of public service to all, in accordance
  • with human rights legislation and the principles of equity and access in the delivery of library service
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence (Class G) in good standing, ability to operate library vehicles and knowledge of the City
  • Ability to meet public with courtesy and tact
  • Ability to use common tools and make repairs and adjustments
  • Ability to work co-operatively with other employees
  • Ability to key in data desirable
  • Capable of lifting and moving heavy objects and doing inside and outside work throughout the year
