PIC Packager
Location: Canada (Hybrid/On-site)
Position Type: Full-Time A well-funded deep-tech startup developing advanced photonic manufacturing technologies is looking for a Photonics Packager to support the fabrication and assembly of next-generation photonic devices. Working within a hands-on R&D environment, you will help build and package integrated photonic assemblies incorporating optical fibres, silicon photonic chips and electronic components. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys laboratory-based work, precision assembly and developing scalable manufacturing processes for advanced photonic technologies.
What You'll Do
Assemble and package photonic devices using precision microfabrication and packaging techniques. Perform die attach, wire bonding, optical alignment, encapsulation and related assembly processes. Operate cleanroom fabrication and metrology equipment to manufacture and inspect devices. Test and characterise fabricated assemblies while monitoring process performance and quality. Produce process documentation, technical reports and manufacturing records. Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing and product development teams to support prototype and product builds. Maintain materials inventory and coordinate shipment of components when required.
Required Qualifications
Diploma or degree in Engineering Technology, Photonics, Applied Science, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. 2+ years of hands-on experience in photonic, semiconductor or microfabrication environments. Experience working in a cleanroom using micro- or nanofabrication processes. Hands-on experience with photonic or semiconductor device fabrication and packaging. Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail when handling miniature components. Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, OnShape or AutoCAD. Strong communication skills and the ability to work within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in photonics, semiconductor or advanced manufacturing environments. Knowledge of silicon photonics packaging and hybrid integration. Python experience for equipment automation or data analysis. Experience working within an R&D, startup or fast-paced product development environment.
