Compensation Range

$6,747.50 - $9,701.42 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

JOB SUMMARY

The School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, invites applications for a 1.0 FTE Research Manager position. The Research Manager will work with Wellstream (

https://wellstream.ca

), a recently established interdisciplinary research centre focused on generating innovative solutions to strengthening mental health and reducing substance use harms for children, youth, and their communities. Wellstream is housed in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, one of the world’s top research institutions (

www.ubc.ca

). The School of Nursing is an outstanding academic unit, has an international reputation for research and scholarship, and has a vision characterized by social relevance and excellence. The School offers a full range of innovative programs, including an intensive upper-division BSN, MN-NP, MSN and PhD program.

Working directly with Dr. Emily Jenkins, the Scientific Director of Wellstream, the Research Manager will oversee the planning and development of Wellstream’s research portfolio focused on mental health promotion and substance use harm prevention, and support project management and programming implementation. They will also work strategically to build and expand relevant relationships with community and academic partners, lead the planning and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, develop and implement knowledge mobilization strategies and products, and mentor other research staff and trainees.

Wellstream is seeking applications from individuals with experience bridging research and practice in educational or community settings, who are interested in furthering their community-engaged and participatory research career and contributing to a scholarly environment committed to impacting practice and policy to address the determinants of wellbeing and creating conditions that foster positive mental health and reduce substance use harms for children, youth and their communities.

WORK PERFORMED

Research and Project Management:

  • responsible for all aspects of project management, including planning and communications for multiple research projects
  • develop and implement project action plans and timelines
  • oversee ethics and grant applications
  • ensure adequate human resources and supplies
  • engage with community partners
  • oversee research budget management and forecasting
  • facilitate various team meetings, including with diverse partners working across sectors

Data Collection, Data Analysis, Supervision of Research Trainees and Knowledge Mobilization:

  • plan and oversee data collection
  • lead analyses and interpretations of qualitative and quantitative datasets
  • lead the production of community and academic reports, policy briefs, communication strategies, interest holder engagement materials, public-facing knowledge products, manuscripts and conference presentations

Partnership and Relationship Management:

  • build and maintain collaborative relationships with partners across education, health, and policy sectors at provincial and national levels in collaboration with the Scientific Director
  • coordinate multi-interest holder engagement processes
  • represent Wellstream in advisory and working groups
  • ensure that partnership activities align with the centre's commitment to equity and community-driven research

The Research Manager will work out of Wellstream’s offices, located at the UBC School of Nursing (Vancouver).

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The quality of the project outputs and the performance of project trainees, assistants and consultants will be affected.

Supervision Received

Dr. Emily Jenkins will provide direct supervision. The Research Manager will work with wide latitude, exercising a considerable amount of autonomy, discretion and initiative in determining work procedures and methods.

Supervision Given

The Research Manager will provide direct supervision of project trainees and research assistants and manage the work of external consultants.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., education, nursing, public health, psychology) from a recognized academic institution.

  • Experience with Canadian K-12 education systems or other similar education systems required.

  • Demonstrated research interests in child, youth, and community mental health and substance use, population health, and social determinants of health.

  • Experience in curriculum development, program design, and/or implementation support.

  • Experience working with or within a national or provincial education and/or health organization

  • Expertise working in a research environment using both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

  • Experience with research design and analysis involving survey research, population-based datasets, multi-site qualitative datasets, and intervention research.

  • Experience working and conducting research with people of diverse genders, sexual orientations, and socio-cultural backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated project management expertise and experience with multi-year, multi-site research studies.

  • Excellent writing skills and demonstrated ability to publish.

  • Effective leadership, mentoring and teamwork skills.

  • Strong foundation in research design and measurement, including mixed-methods design, implementation research, and participatory approaches.

  • Enthusiasm for intellectual rigor and community engagement.

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex, multi-interest holder partnerships across education, health, and policy sectors.

  • Ability to be thorough, accurate and bring a high level of attention to detail.

  • Willingness to work productively in a self-directed manner according to deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
