Responsibilities
Vacancy Status: Existing position
Reporting to the Manager, Student Success, the Student Success Advisor is responsible for providing academic advising that includes course selection, degree progress/degree exploration, degree combinations (specializations, majors, minors, concentrations, certificates). The Student Success Advisor assists with the following: transfer credits, appeals, academic policy issues, at-risk programming (academic).
Responsibility 1: Provide prescriptive and developmental advising to undergraduate students on campus and online
- Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, exploration of academic programs and focusing on academic direction and campus resources.
- Assist students with identification of long-term goals and career plans. Work to position students to meet requirements for graduation within appropriate periods of time while preparing them to meet future goals.
- Assess the student's academic, career, and personal stage of development and promote student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
- Develop and present academic advising and registration sessions to new students including teaching students how to evaluate degree progress. Promote programing at university events.
Responsibility 2: Provide support to students who are completing academic support programs
- Develop customized strategies and develop and implement appropriate interventions to assist students who are not academically eligible to continue in their program.
- Schedule check-ins with students to ensure participation in the program.
- Conduct regular evaluations of academic advantage, Introduction to University Studies, Early warning programming etc.
Responsibility 3: Academic Advocacy for students
- Support students in the Appeals Process (withdrawals, course overrides etc) and participate in Academic Awards and Regulations process.
- Support students regarding transfer credits and admission requirements.
- Liaise with faculty and staff to advocate on behalf of students.
Responsibility 4: Maintain meeting records and provide program data to relevant university stakeholders
- Maintain advising records and confidential student evaluation records.
- Provide programing data including specific student demographics to relevant university departments to provide better service to students.
- Create and administer surveys and feedback questionnaires.
Responsibility 5: Remain current of university policies and procedures and current practices in the Academic Advising field
- Act as a resource to Deans, Associate Deans and faculty program coordinators on matters related to undergraduate education, students, and issues where precedents and best practices are relevant.
- Scrutinize documents such as the Senate minutes for changes that relate to student degree progression.
- Participate in regular departmental, team, and other meetings and committees, projects and initiatives to share information, address student issues/concerns, formulate goals, plan joint work workshops/events/etc.
- Maintain professional development through membership and active participation in relevant organizations (e.g. NACADA, CACUSS).Applies a continually evolving understanding of both the breadth and boundaries of their authority in relation to their duties.
- Maintain, or committed to creating, an equitable diverse and inclusive working environment.
Other Duties:
- Perform other duties within the professional scope and skill level of the position, in full compliance with applicable legislation, university policies, and collective agreements.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Social Sciences or related field
- One (1) to three (3) years of directly related advising experience.
- NACADA training is required/and or must be willing to travel for training.
- Strong initiative and problem- solving skills are essential for the position
- Advising students about progression requirements for a diverse selection of programs;
- A thorough understanding of the developmental approach to student success advising;
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated sensitivity to cross-cultural issues;
- An understanding of the tri-cultural nature of Laurentian University;
- Demonstrate a high degree of analytical thinking, and attention to detail;
- A working knowledge of the Student Records database;
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in harmony with staff and students;
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment;
- A strong work ethic and willingness to take initiative to solve problems and learn new tasks;
- Demonstrated experience working with confidential and sensitive matters; and
- Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
