Your Opportunity:

Do you have a love for genetics and data? The Calgary Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Scientist I – Junior Bioinformatician position supporting the Genetic Laboratories located at Alberta Children’s Hospital, and the Genome Core located at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. G&G, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. The Laboratory Scientist I – Junior Bioinformatician works as part of a collaborative laboratory team comprised of bioinformatic professionals, laboratory geneticists, management, laboratory scientists, technologists, and other laboratory staff to analyze workflow and computational problems, and determine, develop, implement, and maintain computational strategies to enhance delivery of Genetics & Genomics services. The Junior Bioinformatician will support data movement and integration among systems (LIS, instruments, software, data storage) and may support commercial software within all areas of Genetics & Genomics. They may write and use scripts, edit/copy and paste genomic data, and help support pipeline and web interface testing, development, validation and optimization. They may support programming High Performance Computing (HPC) tasks. The successful candidate will have advanced understanding of bioinformatics and computer science, and proven experience with data integration. They will have excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills, and effective organizational, time management, and prioritization skills. They must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate with their team from a remote environment.

Description:

As a Laboratory Scientist I, you will perform work involving laboratory processes including research and development, test method implementation and change, routine testing as well as clinical trials. In addition, you will collect background information including literature reviews, analyze data, and prepare research proposals and summary reports.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science.

Additional Required Qualifications:

MSc in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. Experience with genomics: retrieval, analysis and interpretation of genomic data. Experience with bioinformatics tools such as GATK or Illumina Dragen. Advanced programming skills in at least one programming language as well as extensive experience with running and modifying different software from distinct programming languages. Proficient programming in Python. Experience with database development in SQL or similar. Experience with web development. Proficient in Linux (Red Hat and other common distributions).

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum of 1 year experience in a Bioinformatics role. Minimum 1 year experience with Next Generation Sequencing. Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) scheduler tools such as SLURM. Experience with human genomics analysis. Experience handling clinical data.
