Richmond Steel Recycling Ltd. (RSR) is a scrap metal recycling company operating across British Columbia and Alberta, with its head office located on Mitchell Island in Richmond. Job Summary:
The Operations Supervisor is part of a three-person supervisory team responsible for overseeing yard personnel, including machine operators, production staff, and maintenance teams. This role manages daily operations such as equipment maintenance, monthly inspections, and safety compliance.
This is a fully in-person position, with approximately 75% of the work performed outdoors and 25% indoors. The role follows a rotating weekly schedule:
Week 1: Day shift (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
Week 2: Afternoon shift (4:00 PM – 12:30 AM)
Primary Responsibilities
Personnel Management:
- Supervise, coordinate and lead workforce on shift.
- Schedule yard personnel according to current production needs.
- Actively participate in the hiring/terminating/disciplining/promoting yard personnel.
Safety:
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement in safety, operations, and employee relations.
- Interpret and enforce company policies, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
- Ensure the yard is secured at the end of each shift, including fire watch and environmental controls.
- Safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with SIMS Critical Lifesavers and Golden Rules.
- Deliver daily toolbox talks focused on safety.
Operations & Production:
- Recommend measures to improve production methods and equipment performance.
- Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency.
- Work with Commercial and Scale on coordination of inbound material & outbound shipments.
- Ensure monthly sales volumes are achieved by scheduling crews and company assets.
- Ensure material is inside parameters for sale.
- Ensure that all equipment/yard performances/quotes are, in a timely matter signed off and passed on for purchase orders to be created, ensuring our suppliers are paid.
- Determine best practices to processes to increase profit margin without compromising efficiency.
Quality Assurance:
- Inspect incoming loads to ensure proper grading and sorting.
- Verify material quality following processing.
Additional duties may be assigned based on operational needs, including special projects or coverage across shifts.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience in a heavy manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead both union and non-union employees.
- Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate teams and minimize downtime while maintaining safety.
- Must be computer literate and have strong working knowledge of MS Office applications.
- Post-secondary education in a related field is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with industrial equipment, such as overhead cranes, welding equipment, and shredders.
- Strong understanding of safety practices and regulations.
- Must be able to rotate between morning and afternoon shifts on a weekly basis.

- Visual acuity required for detailed work, data analysis, and computer use.

This yard offers truck and rail service
The Fort St. John yard is located at 9623 78th Street. This yard provides Industrial Obsolete and Demo Scrap Services, Demolition and Dismantling Services, Mobile Bailing Car Crushing and Shearing, Rail Car Loading and more. Truck and rail access are both available.
Our Prince George yard located at 1004 Eastern Street, offers much of the same great Ferrous Metal Recycling and Non-Ferrous Metal Recycling services as our other 3 yards. With services such as Stevedoring, Trucking Boxes and Roll off Container Services, Certified Destruction Capabilities and more, this yard also provides truck and rail access.
