Your opportunity:

The Office of the Vice Dean, Research & Health Science Education oversees all research undertaken for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and coordinates with its counterparts at the affiliated hospital research institutes for clinical research. This includes: grant proposal development, administering internal funding allocations, collecting and reporting on research productivity metrics, and managing research operations in the research labs and core research facilities.

As the Research Operations Officer, you will provide oversight of and support to the research units for the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases and provided added support to the Medical Science Building. You will work with laboratory managers and leadership to ensure efficient, compliant, and consistent delivery of services to researchers within Tanz and MSB. You will utilize your strong communication and operational skills in this role to enhance research space and productivity of the unit.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs, while ensuring standard operating protocols and guidelines are followed
  • Planning and implementing workflow for the unit, including creating and editing standard operating procedures and scheduling the use of communal equipment and resources
  • Analyzing and recommending plans for new equipment and the use of technical spaces and troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or facility repair/maintenance needs
  • Generating reports on space utilizations by preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected
  • Determining logistical details required for internal moves
  • Reviewing and assessing requirements needed to meet project timelines
  • Analyzing and recommending plan and design of labs according to safety regulations
  • Conducting routine lab inspections and determining logistical details required for commissioning and decommissioning of labs/facilities

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in health sciences or acceptable combination of equivalent experience working in a research lab.
  • Minimum four years’ experience in an operational role overseeing day-to-day activities within a lab
  • Hands on experience troubleshooting issues within a lab environment (i.e. lab equipment)
  • Experience implementing plans and process improvements for research by analyzing service delivery and/or internal processes then recommending improvements
  • Knowledge of space planning for proper laboratory workflow or lab set up
  • Strong knowledge of the requirements for specialized lab equipment and health and safety protocols of research spaces; and demonstrated experience creating and editing standard operating procedures
  • Experience preparing statistical reports and summaries on research space usage
  • Ability to provide safety training and compliance, including keeping well informed on health and safety legislation
  • Experience with various financial responsibilities, including managing project costs and obtaining quotes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with team members and clients
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, meet established deadlines, and achieve results in a highly complex environment
  • Sound judgment, tact, patience, and sensitivity to the diverse needs of client
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise a degree of flexibility and adaptability
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of caution around health and safety practices

Assets (Nonessential):
