About the role
Collaborative Research Project with Atlas Copco The Human Systems Lab at the University of Windsor invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PhD obtained within the last 5 years) or Research Associate (Master's/undergraduate degree completed within the last 2 years, depending on qualifications) to join an exciting collaborative research project with Atlas Copco focused on human factors engineering and cognitive load estimation in industrial environments.
This two-year appointment offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of human factors, physiological sensing, signal processing, and artificial intelligence to advance real-time assessment of workers' cognitive load and support the development of next-generation human-centered industrial systems.
Position Details
- Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate

Project Overview The successful candidate will contribute to the development of methods for measuring and estimating workers' cognitive load using physiological and ocular sensing technologies. The research aims to improve workplace performance, safety, and human-machine interaction through advanced analytics and machine learning.
Responsibilities The successful candidate will:
- Conduct human factors investigations and experimental studies related to workers' cognitive load in industrial contexts.
- Design and execute human-subject experiments involving ocular and physiological measurements.
- Design, implement, and evaluate machine learning algorithms for real-time cognitive load estimation.
- Analyze experimental data and communicate findings through technical reports, conference papers, and journal publications.
- Collaborate closely with researchers, students, and engineers from Atlas Copco.
- Support technology transfer activities and prototype development where appropriate.
Required Qualifications For Postdoctoral Fellow Applicants
- PhD completed within the past five years in Human Factors Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Cognitive Engineering, or a related field. For Research Associate Applicants
- Degree completed within the past two years in a relevant discipline, with demonstrated research experience in one or more of the areas listed below.
Required Technical Skills Candidates should possess expertise in most of the following areas:
- Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence (most important)
- Signal Processing (most important)
- Human Factors Engineering (most important)
- Ocular Signal Processing and Eye Tracking
- Experimental Design and Human-Subject Research
- Statistical Data Analysis
- Programming in Python, MATLAB, or similar scientific computing environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cognitive workload assessment methodologies.
- Knowledge of wearable sensing technologies.
- Experience developing real-time machine learning systems.
- Strong publication record (for postdoctoral applicants).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
