What You Will Do Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Emergency Department Offload Specialist is responsible for facilitating early offload of patients, providing emergency and non-emergency care services and performing delegated medical acts, under specific medical directive while complying with the current TOH Hospital medical directives, standards and protocols.
The Specialist performs a variety of non-invasive examinations for patients experiencing injury or illness; such as assess, monitor and treat patients and determine the appropriate course of treatment as per standards, assist Nurses and Physicians, take record of vital signs, blood pressure and temperature monitoring, collect blood samples, swab patients, perform intravenous (IV) access, ECG (electrocardiogram) monitoring, follow infection control protocols, administer medication as specifically ordered, safely operate medical equipment, and perform other related duties or tasks as assigned.
As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the role of the Emergency Department Offload Specialist at TOH is responsible for providing clinical care and managing stable patient assignments under the direct or indirect supervision of a Care Facilitator, a Nurse or a Physician and deliver safe, effective, patient, ethical clinical care.
This position contributes to the shared responsibility of TOH clinical team of ensuring health and safety processes, standards and protocols are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, their families and TOH staff, as well as maintaining confidentiality of private health information.
Basic Requirements
- Completion of a Community College Diploma in Primary Care Paramedic (PCP);
- One to two years of recent experience as a primary care paramedic or equivalent patient clinical care experience in a health care organization;
- Relevant clinical/ medical care experience performing similar roles;
- Standard First Aid & CPR Level HCP (Health Care Professional) with AED (Automated external defibrillator) certification;
- Ability to perform and adapt well under stressful situations, fast paced environment assisting physicians with medical procedures and support with specific expertise;
- Ability to work under pressure and easily adaptable to maintain a calm environment and control over a large influx of people;
- Ability to work well independently and exercise sound judgement;
- Ability to de-escalate conflict and involve leadership appropriately;
- Possess excellent inter-personal; communication, client service and organizational skills and ability to interact with patients from diverse cultures and backgrounds;
- Be able to work in a tent setting (may be subject to weather changes);
- Reliable and punctual;
- Sound judgment and conflict management skills. Problem solving and decision-making skills to safely service clients.
- Possess TOH core competencies/values including patient focus, compassion, commitment to quality, respect to the induvial, collaboration, empathy and personal ownership;
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
- 3-year Community College Diploma in Advanced Care Paramedics or Critical Care Paramedics Program;
- Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (A-EMCA) Certificate;
- Familiar with current paramedic standards and practices;
- Previous experience using Microsoft Office and EPIC;
- Knowledge to work safely and within the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
