We are currently searching for a Recreation Therapist to join our team. This is a permanent, full-time position at our Terra Losa location in West Edmonton.

Position Summary:
The Recreation Therapist will strive to improve the quality of life of Residents using well-designed and thought out treatment plan with therapeutic modalities for those with various interests and capabilities. The Recreation Therapist will direct and collaboratively work with Recreation Coordinators and Assistants to provide appropriate programming using a variety of therapies, including arts and crafts, animal therapy, sports and physical programs, games and intellectual challenges, dance and movement, music therapy, and community outings.

Recreation Therapists aim to improve and maintain the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of the Residents. The Recreation Therapist will conduct standardized assessments to treatment plan, direct the implementation of interventions, document and evaluate resident progress. Treatment plans will be built in conjunction with the interdisciplinary care team and be based on Resident medical and family history, goals, survey questions, standardized assessments, and family input.

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Recreation Therapy Diploma or Degree from a recognized College or University required.
  • Current registration with ATRA, CTRA, ThAAA or LACAA and a member in good standing required.
  • Current CPR and First AID Certification required.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in recreation/activity coordination working with seniors and residents with dementia/special needs in a similar setting is required.
  • Minimum one (1) year in a supervisory role required.
  • Requires a valid Class 5 Driver's License and a clean driving record required. (Class 4 Driver’s License is optional).
  • Able to identify new evidence-based interventions and implement them at the facility
  • Must have an understanding of dementia and special needs care and aging processes along with the effects of medical conditions on leisure participation.
  • Ability to assume leadership in a group with residents, staff, and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Must have patience, tact, friendly disposition, enthusiasm, critical thinking skills, and developed communication skills.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, virtual communication applications, and electronic devices with advanced organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of patient /client safety procedures.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Conducting and interpreting standardized or agency specific initial assessments and reassessments with residents to create appropriate recreation and leisure goals.
  • Develop treatment plans to meet the needs of Residents, based upon history, assessments, surveys, Resident goals, Residents interests and objectives of therapy.
  • Create monthly calendars and newsletters with input from Recreation Therapy Assistants
  • Create or modify resident’s interventions plans based upon observations and recreation therapy assistant feedback.
  • Observe, analyze, and document Resident’s participation, and progress during Therapeutic programming, and adapting treatment plans as needed.
  • Complete related administrative work such as daily intervention statistics, resident chart documentation, and various other administration work
  • Evaluate program effectiveness based upon goals achievement and feedback
  • Connecting with community resources for partnerships.
  • Follow the Leisure Ability model in helping Residents in Treatment, Leisure Education and Recreation Participation
  • Plan and facilitate purposeful interventions that match resident goals to develop specific skills, while providing opportunities for exercise, mental stimulation, creativity, and fun while encouraging participation.
  • Ensure each Resident’s physical, emotional/sensory, cognitive, social, and spiritual needs are met through independent activities or groups in accordance with regulations.
  • Encourage Residents to be as independent as able and to be involved in facilitating their own group programs.
  • Basic budgeting and bookkeeping abilities
  • Other Duties as necessary.
