Who we are
IESO Nova Scotia is a new organization created by provincial government legislation that began operations in 2025. IESO Nova Scotia will reform the way Nova Scotia’s energy system is managed by assuming responsibility for managing the power system in real-time, achieving clean energy goals and planning for the province's future energy needs. Role Summary
This person will report directly to the Manager, Resource Planning and support all aspects of resource and generation planning, including completing technical and economic system studies related to generation additions and retirements, reliability studies, and load growth analyses. In the role of Engineer-in-Training, you will be joining a world-class team that is committed to energizing Nova Scotia, developing our electricity system, and keeping the lights on.
Responsibilities include
Support the ongoing development, maintenance, and validation of the IESO-NS PLEXOS capacity expansion and production cost simulation models Coordination and execution of medium and long-term studies related to introduction of new technologies, unit retirements, system demand configurations, and potential system dispatch improvements Supporting and participating in long term integrated resource planning studies and projects Join and support the analysis of NPCC and/or NERC committees and technical working groups, representing IESO-NS Provide support for regulatory filings as required through modeling, responding to interrogatories, and preparing inputs to analyses and economic models Work with large data sets and analyzing trends and forecasts Translate modelling data and results into clear, user-friendly summaries, reports, and visualizations.
You are
A university graduate with a degree in industrial or electrical engineering, or a similar field Actively registered or eligible to register as an Engineer-in-Training with Engineers Nova Scotia A highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative Well organized and invested in the details Intellectually curious A critical thinker able to manage complex information Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously Proficient in Microsoft 365 Comfortable working and thinking independently as well as part of a team Extra awesome if you also have: Experience in electrical utility / industry resource planning environments Previous experience with generation dispatch models, dynamic programming and deterministic as well as linear and integer optimization algorithms

IESO Nova Scotia is a new, independent, non-profit organization that will be responsible for the planning and reliable operation of Nova Scotia’s bulk electricity system. Starting in 2025, IESO Nova Scotia is taking on its responsibilities of planning and management from Nova Scotia Power in a phased way over the next two years. This includes running the integrated resource planning processes, overseeing procurement of energy resources and services, system operations, and the transition to clean energy in a fair and transparent way.
