Compensation: $89,508.74 – $105,520.37plus a comprehensive compensation package that includes time-off entitlements, health benefits, life insurance, and participation in the HOOPP pension plan.

We are Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC), a non-profit, community-governed organization that serves over 18,000 clients annually. Established in 1978, SWCHC provides a wide range of health care services such as primary health care, health promotion, community development, mental health, and harm reduction. What the Program Entails

The Community Engagement portfolio supports community wellbeing through health promotion, community development, Chinese seniors programming, and place-based community services. This work is grounded in the Community Health Centre model of care and focuses on strengthening community capacity, reducing barriers to access, and advancing health equity. Through collaborative programs and partnerships, the portfolio responds to community priorities and supports inclusive, community-informed approaches that promote participation, advocacy, and overall wellbeing.

What You’ll Do

The Community Engagement Manager is responsible and accountable for the coordination and implementation of community programs within the framework of the SWCHC philosophy and strategic direction. They handle all aspects of staff management and administration for the Community Engagement team, which includes the Community Health Promotion portfolio, the Rochester Heights Community House, Sunshine Hub, and the Yet Keen Seniors Day Centre. The Community Engagement Manager leads and coordinates strategic advocacy in collaboration with the SWCHC Board of Directors through the Advocacy Committee, supporting the development of healthy public policy across all levels of government. The role provides leadership in advancing health equity, anti-racism, and anti-oppression, addressing systemic barriers that impact community health and wellbeing.

What We’re Looking For

Life and Work Experience

  • Significant experience in community development, community engagement, or community-based health and social services.

  • Experience coordinating, developing, implementing, and evaluating community programs, projects, or services.

  • Experience leading strategic initiatives and supporting community-informed planning processes.

  • Experience building partnerships and collaborating with community organizations, agencies, institutions, funders, and other stakeholders.

  • Experience in staff supervision, team leadership, and broader people management responsibilities.

  • Experience working with issues related to health equity, anti-racism, anti-oppression, and the social determinants of health.

  • Experience supporting advocacy, public policy, or system-level engagement is an asset.

  • Experience with budget oversight, resource planning, and program accountability is an asset.

Your Education Path

  • Master’s Degree in relevant discipline (social work, sociology, public health, etc.) or a combination of undergraduate degree and significant community development experience.

Required Language

  • Fluency in English is required.

  • Working knowledge of French or other languages are an asset.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Demonstrated ability to design and successfully implement strategic initiatives.
  • Understanding of the Community Health Centre model of care, including community development lens.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of health equity, inclusion and anti-racism/anti-oppression.
  • Strong understanding of equity, anti-racism, the social determinants of health and how these issues relate to the policy and political systems.
  • Demonstrated analytical and policy analysis skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate to different audiences.
  • Demonstrated broad-based management skills including leadership, human resources, finance, decision-making, change management and communications.
  • Community program development and project management skills and experience.
  • Strong technical skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, Google, social media platforms and productivity tools (for example, Canva, Survey Monkey).
  • Standard First Aid

Your Day-to-Day at a Glance

As our Community Engagement Manager, your responsibilities are:

  • Fosters an organizational culture consistent with the SWCHC mission, vision, and values.
  • As a member of the leadership team, ensures transparent decision making, accountability, and communication processes, ensuring organizational success.
  • Responsible for initiating and supporting Community Engagement team programs and initiatives, including but not limited to community health promotion, outreach initiatives, community-based programming (e.g., Rochester Heights Community House, Sunshine Hub), and Yet Keen Seniors program. Maintain an emphasis on program areas identified in the strategic and operational plans.
  • Identifies and explores the need for new programs and services and supports development.
  • Contributes to the Centre’s work by participation in activities that seek to strengthen collaborative and interdisciplinary teamwork, such as inter-component committees and working groups, strategic planning and accreditation activities.
  • Liaises with funders, management, and community partners to support financial solvency and good use of resources. Oversees and supports new funding requests within portfolio.
  • Supports internal and external communications policies and procedures which promote awareness of and participation in organizational activities.
  • Supports SWCHC operational and strategic planning processes and execution.
  • Maintains an awareness of current issues in the SWCHC catchment area and in the health and social services systems to support this effort. Shares responsibility for strategic direction decisions for SWCHC with other members of the leadership team.
  • Builds, promotes, and maintains strong partnerships with other Community Health and Resource Centres, institutions (hospitals), service agencies, funders, City of Ottawa departments and organizations at the local and provincial levels.
