We are currently hiring a Transportation Engineer to lead the City’s involvement in the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE), a generational transit investment that will transform regional connectivity and shape future growth. This is a high-profile role with broad exposure and strategic significance. You will coordinate across multiple stakeholders, including Metrolinx, York Region, and other transit agencies, to represent the City’s interests throughout the planning, design, and delivery of the project.

Job Summary The Transportation Engineer will be responsible for leading the coordination, technical review and oversight of transportation matters related to the Yonge North Subway Extension project. This role involves close collaboration with Metrolinx, York Region and other municipal and transit agencies, as well as other City Departments. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise and strategic input to support the integration of YNSE-related transportation infrastructure with the broader city-building objectives. In addition, the role will support the coordination of other municipal planning and transportation initiatives to ensure alignment with the YNSE and advance the City’s long term mobility goals.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) project schedule, scope, and deliverables to ensure the City’s transportation interests are met.
  • Lead the technical review of YNSE transportation deliverables, including transportation studies, functional designs, traffic control plans, and engineering reports to ensure compliance with City standards, policies, and strategic objectives.
  • Provide technical support and strategic input to ensure the YNSE is integrated with the City’s transportation policies, land use plans, growth management objectives, and regional transit network.
  • Liaise and coordinate with Metrolinx, York Region, transit agencies, other key stakeholders, and internal City departments to ensure alignment between the YNSE and other City initiatives, including secondary plans, master plans, and capital projects.
  • Represent the City at meetings with Metrolinx, York Region, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders to address transportation-related matters, resolve conflicts, and identify opportunities and solutions.
  • Support the preparation of coordinated City comments on YNSE submissions, including technical memorandums, staff reports, briefing notes, and presentations for senior management and City Council.
  • Collaborate with City Operations Department and York Region to coordinate and review Road Occupancy Permit (RoP) applications and provide input on YNSE contractor traffic control and staging plans.
  • Respond to YNSE transportation-related inquiries from internal departments, developers, consultants, external agencies, and the public, as required.
  • Provide regular updates and technical briefings to internal City teams to inform and support development applications, planning studies, and infrastructure design.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external partners to support project success.
  • Ensure that transportation documentation for the YNSE project is organized, current, and accessible to support project tracking, decision-making, and reporting.
  • Effectively communicate technical ideas, issues, and recommendations in written reports and verbal presentations to senior leadership, Council, committees, and public stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, managing and analyzing complex transportation issues within prescribed timelines.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering related to transportation planning/traffic engineering, or a related discipline
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in transportation planning/traffic engineering and project management.
  • Experience in managing transit-related infrastructure projects or leading municipal involvement in transit initiatives is strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of transportation planning, traffic engineering, and functional design principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex transportation issues and develop practical, data-driven solutions.
  • Experience in road occupancy permit (RoP) processes, including the review of traffic control and staging plans for construction activities within municipal/regional road rights-of-way.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports, Council presentations, and briefing notes.
  • Effective interpersonal, negotiation, and customer service skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of audiences, including staff, agencies, consultants, and the public.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, exercising sound judgment and initiative.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation, standards, and guidelines, including the Highway Capacity Manual, Synchro, Highway Traffic Act, Municipal Act, Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM), AODA, and geometric design guidelines.
  • Must hold a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and have access to a personal vehicle for City business.
