We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Senior Controller to oversee our financial operations and support the company’s continued growth. This is a key leadership position responsible for managing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, and audits, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with regulatory standards. The Senior Controller will also play a vital role in preparing and presenting financial information to the Board of Directors, collaborating closely with senior leadership to provide insights that drive sound business decisions.

The ideal candidate is a results-driven finance professional with a proven track record in accounting leadership, audit coordination, and board-level reporting. They bring a passion for process improvement, strong technical expertise, and the ability to build collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization. This role requires regular on-site presence to effectively collaborate with colleagues and provide hands-on leadership.

Primary Purpose of the Role :

The Senior Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial accounting operations of the Divine Group of Companies, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards, maintaining strong internal controls, and providing accurate, timely financial reporting. The Senior Controller provides both tactical and strategic financial leadership to support the organization’s operational and growth objectives. This role plays a critical part in accurate financial reporting, cash management support, external audits, and team development, ensuring the financial health and operational efficiency of the organization.

Key Responsibilities :

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Manage the monthly accounting calendar, ensuring timely month-end and year-end closings.
  • Ensure the timely preparation and accuracy of financial statements and management reports in accordance with IFRS/ASPE and internal guidelines.
  • Lead and coordinate year-end audits, including preparation of audit schedules, responding to auditor inquiries, and ensuring successful audit outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, reconciliations, accruals, and key performance reporting.
  • Ensure tax compliance, including installment payments, filings, and working with external accountants for corporate tax returns.

Accounting Operations Oversight

  • Direct and manage the full accounting cycle including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Oversee revenue recognition, inventory management, progress billings, commission calculations, inter-company transactions, and cash management reporting.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards.
  • Development of policy manuals and documentation, including workflow processes for audit purposes.
  • Manage and approve payments, purchase orders, and financial adjustments.

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Provide financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to senior leadership to assist with strategic planning and operational decision-making.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, pricing strategies, cost analysis, and monitor liquidity to ensure operational cash needs are met, in coordination with the Vice President, Corporate Services.
  • Conduct monthly meetings with General Managers and Department Heads to review divisional performance v. cost and control v. variance analysis.
  • Collaborate with operations, sales, estimating, and HR to align financial goals with operational strategies.
  • Foster and manage relationships with external auditors, banking institutions, insurance providers, and other key financial stakeholders.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, lead, and develop the accounting team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Conduct one-on-one coaching, training, and performance reviews for accounting team members.
  • Champion cross-departmental collaboration to improve workflow, communication, and service levels across the organization.

Qualifications and Experience :

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management roles.
  • Strong technical proficiency in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
  • Proven track record in managing external audit processes and building strong relationships with financial institutions.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Skills and Competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of IFRS, ASPE, and Canadian financial regulations.
  • Previous experience with FX required.
  • Proficiency with accounting and financial reporting systems (e.g., MS Dynamics, QuickBooks, Sage), and Microsoft Excel.
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and internal controls.
  • Experience managing year-end audits and liaising with external auditors and banks.
  • US State Tax experience considered an asset.
  • Prior software integration experience (Business Central and/or Xero) considered an asset.

Leadership and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build, mentor, and develop high-performing finance teams.
  • Professional demeanor with strong relationship management skills, both internally and externally.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
