About the role

NATURE OF WORK:
The principal and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists of assisting the teaching personnel in the preparation, presentation, supervision and evaluation of laboratory work, field work, and workshops. In addition, the Laboratory Technician may also be called upon to assist the faculty with student assessments and the provision of a positive learning environment for the students.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Preparation & Organization:

  • Prepares the lab according to the guidelines;

  • Assist faculty for laboratory preparation and presentation of scheduled laboratories;

  • Establishes a practical laboratory schedule, in collaboration with the department chair;

  • Prepares laboratory for activities related to “Open House” activities;

  • Prepares and makes laboratory course schedule recommendations to the department supervisor

Student Demonstrations & Assessments:

  • Supervises and acts as a resource person for students during lab activities;

  • Assists faculty in the supervision of students during examinations in the laboratory and classrooms;

  • Reports to faculty incidents of inadequate professional conduct of students;

  • Organizes and schedules lab review sessions for out-of-phase students in January and May.

Laboratory equipment:

  • Maintains the laboratory and equipment in a hygienic, clean and mechanical working order.

  • Schedules and performs Quality Control testing for processor, x-ray equipment and all other lab equipment; Identifies equipment problems and coordinates service calls.

  • Maintains inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies and places orders when needed.

  • Distributes and maintains records of the OSLs (radiation monitoring) for faculty, staff and students.

  • Reports unusual OSL dose readings to the radiation safety officer and reviews dosimetry reports.

  • Uses purchasing software specific to Dawson College (e.g. CLARA Finance)

  • Ensures a safe work environment at all times.

  • Coordinates book library update, loan policy, new entries, monthly journals etc.

  • Organizes and maintains digital image banks and provides access for faculty and students

Other responsibilities:

  • Assists in new student applicant interview process.
  • Organizes the fitting of N95 masks for students.
  • Prepares summer mailing information package
  • Provides information and follow-up to incoming applicants during the summer.
  • Collaborates with members of the department in preparing for accreditation.
  • Assists with selective college events e.g. Open House, High School visits, registration etc.
  • Participates in departmental meetings e.g. Advisory and Instructors’ Committee meetings
  • General lab support and other lab-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements :

QUALIFICATIONS
To have a diploma of college studies in the appropriate professional field (such as Diagnostic Imaging) or a diploma or an attestation of studies that is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

CONDITIONS
•• Be a member in good standing with l’Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale, en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec (OTIMROEPMQ);

  • Proven knowledge of diagnostic imaging techniques in a clinical environment (testing may be required*);
  • Proven knowledge in the practical use of various modalities such as CT, MRI, BMD, CR/DR, PACS/RIS/HIS
  • (testing may be required*);
  • Advanced oral and written English communication skills (testing may be required);
  • Basic oral and written French communication skills (testing may be required);
  • Basic level Word and Excel (testing may be required).
