Knopf Canada is looking for Editor/Senior Editor to join our team: We're open to hiring at either the Editor or Senior Editor level. The final title and compensation will reflect the successful candidate's experience and background.

Your contribution to the story: For more than 30 years, Knopf Canada has been literary home to some of the world’s finest writers. We care deeply about stories and ideas and the power of art to change the way we think. As a team, we are committed to asking questions openly, sharing answers freely, learning from each other to strengthen and refine how we work. Launched in 2022, under the leadership of editorial director Dionne Brand, the Alchemy list publishes brilliant writers who through their thinking and art explore a radical vision for the future. Together we are looking for an accomplished editor to join our conversations. This position will report to the publisher of Knopf Canada.
What you’ll do: Solicit, read, and evaluate manuscripts and proposals. Participate in and contribute to acquisition conversations within the group. Acquire and edit literary fiction and narrative non-fiction titles. Collaborate with Alchemy’s editorial director in the acquisition and editing of 3-5 titles a year Negotiate offers with agents and authors. Substantively edit manuscripts. Manage the lifecycle of the editorial process from acquisition to publication maintaining effective relationships with production, managing editorial/copyediting, cover, and interior design. Act as advocate within the company, working in close partnership with marketing, publicity, and sales teams to realize the best publication opportunities for each book. Develop and maintain author and agent relationships. Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications): A minimum of 5-8 years of editorial experience in book publishing or a related field. A proven record of editorial excellence in literary fiction and narrative non-fiction. A love of reading, and a dedicated interest in the ideas and voices that shape our world. Exceptional creative initiative. An understanding of the Canadian literary marketplace and cultural landscape. Impeccable substantive and line editing skills. Expert copywriting skills. Strong negotiation skills. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines. Independent, curious, passionate, and purposeful, this person will be a vital member of a small and highly collaborative team. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and collaborative digital tools including Teams and similar platforms. An inclusive approach to your work, supported by well-developed cultural competency skills and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds. Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
This role is expected to work at least three days per week from our office located at 320 Front Street West, Toronto, ON. Therefore, candidates should reside within the commuting distance of our office. Recruitment for this role will be primarily focused on candidates based in the Greater Toronto Area. Remote candidates based elsewhere in Canada may also be considered.
