About the role

Telesat (Nasdaq and TSX: TSAT) is a leading global satellite operator, providing reliable and secure satellite-delivered communications solutions worldwide to broadcast, telecommunications, corporate and government customers for over 55 years. Backed by a legacy of engineering excellence, reliability and industry-leading customer service, Telesat has grown to be one of the largest and most successful global satellite operators.

Telesat Lightspeed, our revolutionary Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, scheduled to begin service in 2027, will revolutionize global broadband connectivity for enterprise and Government users by delivering a combination of high capacity, security, resiliency and affordability with ultra-low latency and fiber-like speeds. Telesat is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and has offices and facilities around the world.

The company’s state-of-the-art Satellite fleet consists of 14 GEO satellites, the Canadian payload on ViaSat-1 and one LEO 3 demonstration satellite. For more information, follow Telesat on X and LinkedIn or visit www.telesat.com

About The Team Maestro Pulsar is a mission-critical, globally deployed platform supporting distributed service orchestration, connectivity management, and operational control across a complex ecosystem of internal services and external integrations.

The platform runs across multi-region (East/West) Azure, with zone-redundant regional gateways, global traffic steering, and both public and private connectivity paths. Reliability, correctness, and operational readiness are first-class concerns.

About The Role We are looking for a Senior Software Developer who combines strong hands-on engineering skills with the ability to own complex technical problem spaces end to end.

This role goes beyond feature delivery. You will:

Own the design and evolution of critical services

Translate architectural direction and product intent into robust, production-ready implementations

Influence service contracts, resiliency patterns, and operational standards

Provide technical leadership and continuity for a long-lived platform

You will work closely with Software Architects, Product Owners, SRE/Operations, and Security, contributing to upstream design decisions while remaining accountable for high-quality execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Service Design & Development
  • Design, develop, and maintain Java-based services within a distributed, event-driven architecture
  • Own service behavior end to end: APIs, workflows, persistence, failure handling, and operational characteristics
  • Design and evolve service interfaces and contracts (REST, gRPC, async messaging) with attention to:
  • Versioning and backward compatibility
  • Error models and idempotency
  • Timeout, retry, and failure semantics
  • Ensure implementations align with platform architecture patterns while remaining pragmatic and operable
  • Technical Ownership & Collaboration
  • Partner with Software Architects to translate architectural patterns into concrete, implementable designs
  • Work with Product Owners to refine features into well-scoped, engineering-ready work with clear acceptance criteria
  • Act as a technical point of contact for your services, supporting design discussions, reviews, and cross-team alignment
  • Contribute to architecture and design reviews, identifying risks, gaps, and improvement opportunities
  • Resiliency & Production Readiness
  • Build services that are production-ready by design, including:
  • Health checks, graceful degradation, and recovery behavior
  • Observability (logs, metrics, traces) aligned to SLIs/SLOs
  • Capacity and performance considerations
  • Participate in multi-region resiliency design and validation:
  • Failover and failback behavior
  • Automation guardrails and operational runbooks
  • Readiness drills and post-incident improvements
  • Collaborate with SRE/Operations to ensure operational requirements are addressed before production release
  • Quality, Standards & Mentorship
  • Uphold high engineering standards for code quality, testing, documentation, and maintainability
  • Contribute to shared service patterns and best practices across the platform
  • Mentor and support other developers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical guidance
  • Help reduce long-term platform risk by addressing technical debt and systemic issues

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in software development for complex, distributed systems
  • Strong hands-on experience with Matlab, Java, Python and modern backend development practices
  • Proven experience building and operating highly available, fault-tolerant services in production
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts: microservices, event-driven architectures, API gateways, messaging systems
  • Experience defining and implementing non-functional requirements (availability, resiliency, scalability, security)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, architecture, and operations

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud-hosted platforms (Azure preferred), including networking and identity concepts
  • Exposure to multi-region deployments, failover strategies, and disaster recovery
  • Familiarity with observability practices (SLIs/SLOs, monitoring, alerting)
  • Background in mission-critical, telecom, networking, or control-plane systems
