Health and Counseling Services is a dynamic, supportive and multi-disciplinary team providing medical, counselling and mental health support for the SFU student population. Our diverse team of service providers includes physicians, nurses, international student case manager, Indigenous Student Counsellors, Counsellor for Black Students, Counsellor for 2SLGBTQIA+ Students, Counsellor for Students with Neurodiversity and Disability, Clinical Counsellors and Psychologists. Our counselling team provides individual, brief counselling, group support, psycho-educational workshops and collaborates with SFU student services in supporting the SFU student body. We are a training site and maintain a robust, counseling training program for doctoral psychology interns and master's level counsellor trainees.

About the Role

The Clinical Counsellor is responsible for providing anti-oppressive, trauma informed, personal and group counselling for SFU students. The position assists in coordinating the M.A. and PhD. doctoral practicum program and provides clinical supervision for counsellor trainees. The Counsellor works collaboratively with other staff at Health and Counselling to provide individual assistance, brief counselling, crisis support, groups, workshops, outreach services, and programing initiatives to enhance SFU students’ social and psychological wellbeing. The Counsellor also provides consultation to Student Services, Faculty and SFU staff who are supporting students in crisis and emergency situations.

A Clinical Counsellor who maintains a compassionate, culturally competent, trauma informed and anti-oppressive practice and understands the issues impacting students in a post-secondary context. Knowledge and experience in counselling individuals from diverse and equity-deserving populations and familiar with feminist, anti-oppressive, anti-racist practices and proficient in risk assessment and safety planning in community, family, and post-secondary settings. Knowledgeable of community resources, supports and systems of care within the community. A strong communicator with experience in developing and delivering relevant, student-centered programing for promoting mental health and well-being.
