The 2nd Class Chief Operating Engineer is responsible for overseeing the preventative maintenance and repair of plant equipment to ensure uninterrupted day-to-day operations. This salaried position requires working Monday to Friday and being on-call 24/7 as the facility operates continuously.

Responsibilities
- Oversee the safe and efficient operation of boilers, pressure vessels, and ammonia refrigeration systems as per relevant codes and regulations.
- Conduct daily plant inspections of steam boiler systems and ammonia refrigeration to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Record data and relevant information related to plant operations.
- Take initiative to reduce energy consumption, including gas, electricity, water, and ammonia usage.
- Network with other business units to develop best practices in energy management.
- Undertake capital projects to improve plant performance in consultation with the Maintenance Manager, Plant Manager, and Corporate Engineering.
- Develop and implement system changes and upgrades for operational efficiencies.
- Apply theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of operations, repair procedures, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance to support facility equipment reliability.
- Set front-line performance standards, providing coaching and feedback to build capability and improve performance.
Lead the maintenance, operation, and continuous improvement of:
- Ammonia refrigeration systems
- CO2 distribution systems
- Nitrogen distribution systems
- Compressed air systems
- Boilers and steam distribution systems
- Water treatment and distribution systems
- Syrup batching systems
- Central chemical distribution
- Building safety systems
- Manage daily contractors and develop refrigeration A and B qualified skilled trades.
- Lead site resource conservation efforts and both the ammonia safety program and confined space safety program.
- Lead building and facilities work plans.
Qualifications
- Must hold a valid 2nd class operating engineer's license.
- Previous experience as a chief operating engineer is an asset.
- 5+ years of experience as a 2nd class operating engineer required.
- 3+ years of manufacturing/maintenance supervisory experience required.
- 2+ years of work experience in a supervisory position required.
- Experience in consumer-packaged products or a similar industry preferred.
- Strong employee relations, interpersonal, and verbal/written communication skills.
- Strong computer skills required.
- Solid problem-solving, planning, and process skills.
- Demonstrated computer proficiency with Microsoft Suite.
- Solid oral presentation skills required.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and own a vehicle.
- Must be able to perform frequent lifting, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and reaching over the shoulder.
