Our client is in the Medical Device industry and is looking for someone with a PhD in the Biomedical, Material, or Chemical Engineering domain, strong knowledge of biopolymers, industry experience with medical device (Level I and II), and experience with material characterization techniques. This position is a contract-to-hire position.

Please reference Job Title R&D Senior Scientist The Senior Scientist, is a key member of the R&D team responsible for leading the development, characterization, and application of biomaterials for medical device technologies. This role emphasizes polymer science and the utilization of naturally occurring biopolymers (e.g., gelatin, CMC) for implantable and bio-interfacing applications. The Senior Scientist provides scientific expertise and technical leadership across product development stages, from concept through commercialization, ensuring alignment with regulatory and quality requirements. The position contributes to innovation, cross-functional collaboration, and the advancement of next-generation product solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, and optimization of novel biomaterials tailored for medical devices
- Conduct and oversee material characterization studies (mechanical, chemical, biological properties)
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, clinical, and regulatory teams to translate material innovations into safe and effective products.
- Stay current with emerging biomaterials technologies, scientific literature, and regulatory guidelines (e.g., ISO 10993, FDA guidance).
- Design and manage in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility studies, degradation assessments, and long-term stability testing.
- Assists with design and running of experiments and validations
- Author technical reports, design and development documentation, patent disclosures, and scientific publications.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior scientists and engineers.
- Interface with external collaborators, suppliers, and contract research organizations (CROs).
- Support regulatory submissions by providing material-related data and justifications.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Key Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 3+ years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience; or M.S. with 5+ years of experience.
- Deep knowledge of biocompatible materials, particularly polymers, hydrogels, bioresorbables, and surface modifications.
- Proven track record in medical device development, preferably Class II or III devices.
- Hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, HPLC, viscometry, mechanical testing, etc).
- Familiarity with sterilization methods, degradation mechanisms, and regulatory requirements for biomaterials
- Experience with bioconjugation, the use of gelatin and CMC, and multiple statistical analytical tools
- Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and design controls under FDA/ISO frameworks.
- Strong project management and communication skills.
- Demonstrated innovation through patents or publications.
- Computer literacy - proficient user in Microsoft Office Suite, experience with SharePoint and/or MS Project a plus
- Health and Safety experience is an asset
- Experience in a medical device area an asset
- Excellent time management, multi-tasking abilities, planning and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
