Overview Senior Protection & Controls Engineer - Field Location: British Columbia, Canada

Shermco Industries is growing across Western Canada and is looking for a field Senior Protection & Controls Engineer to join our team in British Columbia. This role is ideal for an experienced P&C professional who enjoys working in the field, solving complex technical challenges, and contributing to the safety and reliability of critical power infrastructure.
You’ll work on high-impact transmission, distribution, generation, and industrial power system projects, supporting utilities and major industrial clients through commissioning, testing, and modernization of protection, control, and communication systems.
Responsibilities
- Install, commission, test, troubleshoot, and maintain protection relays, control systems, RTUs, DFRs, powerline carrier equipment, and substation automation systems.
- Perform functional testing of protection and control schemes for lines, buses, transformers, breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks.
- Execute RTU and telecommunications upgrades, ensuring accurate configuration and reliable system performance.
- Work with SEL (strongly preferred) and GE protection relays, as well as major RTU and communication processor platforms.
- Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and configuration files; identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare accurate test reports and documentation in compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain company tools, test equipment, and assigned vehicle in safe, professional condition.
Qualifications

7–15 years of experience on large or complex substation and generation projects involving significant coordination or sequencing.

Diploma or Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, Protection & Controls, or a related field.

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline is an asset.

Completion of recognized industry training in Protection & Controls, relay testing, or substation commissioning.

NETA Certification (Level I–IV) or equivalent testing certification preferred.

Utility or manufacturer relay training (e.g., SEL, GE) is a strong asset.

Hands-on experience with:

SEL relays (311, 387, 411, 421, 487, 587, 787 series)
-
GE relays (C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, T60 – desired)
-
RTU and communication platforms including GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, and Novatech
