Elim Village operates two exceptional aging in place communities for older adults. Job Summary Working from a Christian faith-based perspective, the Chaplain responds with compassion and inclusiveness to the spiritual health needs identified by residents, their families, and staff through a process of assessment and care. Over intentional relationship building the Chaplain comes alongside to assist individuals to live well and offers support through end-of-life care. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Chaplain is skilled in offering existential, spiritual, and religious resident care across beliefs, cultural perspectives, and practices.

Qualifications

  • Training in theology, counselling, social work, or related discipline.
  • Education or experience relevant to spiritual care within a multicultural and faith setting.
  • Experience addressing the needs of residents and families encountering crisis, disability, loss, bereavement, and end-of-life.
  • Training and/or experience working with older adults and individuals living with a variety of conditions and cognitive impairments including dementia.
  • Solid understanding and adherence to Christian theology and principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain an active and visible role within the Full Care department at Elim Village.
  • Build relationships by coming alongside residents and families in a variety of areas but not limited to: emotional and spiritual wellbeing, dealing with issues of death and dying, spiritual/emotional distress, adaptation to illness, social functioning, advocacy issues and communication.
  • Work closely with team members in handling situations requiring grief support.
  • Represent the Pastoral team in weekly resident care meetings preparing and providing a spiritual overview and assessment for each resident participant.
  • Build relationships with staff members and volunteers providing emotional and spiritual support as needed and requested.
  • Attend the Full Care Core Team meetings.
  • Act as an ad hoc resource and support for the care team and with their own self-care needs, as health care providers.
  • As able, participate as part of the Pastoral team in programming and events.
  • Other duties such as, but not limited to, documentation and record keeping required for operational purposes.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Willingness to embrace Elim’s mission and supporting statements that guide our daily interactions.
  • Sensitivity and ability to work with residents and families with diverse values, beliefs, and backgrounds (socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, spiritual, etc.).
  • Genuine sensitivity and empathy towards individuals and their families coping with the stresses of full care and end of life.
  • Demonstrates resident-centred approach to care.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain collaborative relationships with members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent active listening skills, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Self-direction and independent decision making, sound clinical judgement and critical thinking skills; with a demonstrated ability to function effectively within a dynamic and challenging environment.
  • Able to generate rapport rapidly and with a wide diversity of residents and those close to them.
  • Committed to personal, physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual well-being and development.
  • Strong understanding and compliance with the principles and practice of confidentiality.
  • Clear understanding of the palliative care philosophy and end of life care at Elim Village.
  • Demonstrates ethical and professional conduct that reflects and upholds the values and standards of care of Elim Village.

Notes

  • This is a part-time position at the Fleetwood Campus.
  • Competitive compensation based on qualifications and experience.

Working Conditions

  • Employee must be able to work on-the-job site.
  • This position may require availability for some weekends.
