Job Purpose
The Vice President, Business Development leads the company’s business development, sales, and estimating functions while setting strategic direction to drive sustainable growth. This role identifies and secures new business opportunities, builds strategic partnerships, and expands Waiward’s market presence in alignment with long-term objectives. The VP also strengthens client relationships and enhances the company’s competitive position to support ongoing profitability.
Responsibilities:
Values, Vision, and Strategy
- Champion and embed Waiward’s core values, including its incident-free vision and culture, while aligning business development activities with corporate strategy.
- Understand, communicate, and support the Waiward Quality Management System as it relates to Business Development.
Corporate Strategy
- Collaborate with the President & CEO, CFO, VP, Construction, VP, Fabrication, and VP, Corporate Services to develop and execute overall corporate strategy.
- Foster a high-performance culture that drives accountability, employee engagement, and motivation.
- Lead the development, communication, and execution of the business development strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
- Support executive decision-making to maximize short, medium and long-term profitability and shareholder value.
- Develop and manage budgets in accordance with Waiward’s policies and corporate governance standards.
Business Development & Market Growth
- Lead and develop the Business Development team to identify, pursue, and secure new opportunities.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of Waiward’s products and services and effectively position them in the market.
- Monitor industry trends, market conditions, and competitor activity to identify strategic opportunities.
- Identify, evaluate, and pursue new markets, partnerships, and joint ventures, including risk and opportunity analysis.
- Strengthen and expand relationships with existing and past clients to enhance market position.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of customer data to support strategic engagement.
- Lead contract development and negotiations.
- Ensure effective marketing, branding, and promotional activities aligned with corporate objectives.
- Promote and uphold Waiward’s culture, values, and reputation with all stakeholders.
Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality
- Ensure the effective implementation of the Quality Management System within Business Development.
- Promote and ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Marketing, Engineering, Commerce, or a related field; MBA or equivalent is an asset.
- 10-15+ years of progressive leadership experience in business development, sales, or commercial roles, preferably within construction, industrial services, or steel fabrication.
- Proven track record of driving revenue growth, securing major contracts, and developing strategic partnerships.
- Strong financial and commercial acumen, including experience with budgeting, forecasting, estimating, and contract negotiation.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans aligned with corporate objectives.
- In-depth knowledge of industry trends, market dynamics, and competitive landscapes.
- Active involvement in industry associations (e.g., Edmonton Construction Association, Alberta Steel Manufacturers, or similar organizations).
- Established industry network with the ability to represent the organization at conferences and speaking engagements.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at the executive level.
- Proven ability to build, lead, and motivate high-performing teams in a performance-driven environment.
- Strong understanding of risk management, project delivery models, and business development processes.
- Demonstrated passion for the industry and the ability to effectively communicate and promote the organization’s vision, values, and brand.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid working environment, combining office-based or remote working arrangements with regular attendance in the office, as dictated by operational requirements.
- May require the incumbent to walk stairs; be outside inclement weather (slippery surfaces and cold); carrying objects, driving and being exposed to normal office routines.
Physical Requirements
- The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal for extended periods of time, and extensive reading.
- The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
