Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Masters degree in a related study area.
  • -or-
  • Bachelors degree in a related discipline and a minimum of three years directly-related experience.
  • Certified Exercise Professional preferred .
  • First Aid/CPR certification.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of both the theoretical basis and practical application of exercise and fitness testing procedures is required.
  • Technical knowledge of equipment used in labs (e.g.; treadmills, spirometers, ECG monitoring, oxygen uptake testing, gas analyzers, BioAmps, Biodex isokinetic dynamometer, cycle ergometers, and grip force transducers) are required.
  • Knowledge of methods for biological signal acquisition (e.g. motion analysis systems, force platforms, EMG, eye tracking, force transducers, Biodex, metabolic carts) and methods for digital signal processing (using programs such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, etc.).
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Effective communications skills, both written and oral, are required Computer proficiency and troubleshooting skills are required.
  • Ability to safely administer exercise testing procedures and correctly interpret the data acquired is required Ability to plan, organize, and administer projects is required.
  • Ability to work within time and budget constraints is required.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new techniques is required.
  • Ability to keep abreast of developments in the areas of expertise is required Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team is required.
  • Ability to physically perform duties as assigned, which may include mobility and/or moderate to heavy lifting.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience assisting with undergraduate labs is preferred Instructional experience in formal settings is preferred.
  • Proficiency in the use of research based computer programs is preferred Demonstrated research experience preferred.

Key responsibilities

  • After conferring with the faculty member(s) responsible for the course, train the lab demos in the procedures to be employed and the proper use of equipment to be used in the lab.
  • Prepare lab demos for the independent delivery of lab content to ensure that all labs in a course are consistent.
  • Support lab demos in acquiring knowledge of the subject area and equipment usage.
  • Assist in the development of lab demos’ teaching methods, delivery of content, and communication, skills.
  • Oversee proper use and readiness of all laboratory facilities operated by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management.
  • Organize the lab equipment and materials to better facilitate instructor and student usage.
  • Plan, maintain, and prepare equipment for use in research projects and in undergraduate course labs.
  • Identify repairs needed to equipment and communicate needs to supervisors.
  • Ensure that all equipment is catalogued and stored properly.
  • Acquire training on how to use all equipment.
  • Assist in the training of lab demos, research assistants, researchers, and students on how to use equipment safely.
  • Cooperate with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Coordinators of the Active Living Centre, Frank Kennedy Centre, Extended Education Complex, Max Bell Centre, and Investors Group Athletic Centre to ensure safety standards are attained and maintained in all Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management labs.
  • Investigate and recommend lab equipment and supplies for the daily operation of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management’s research and undergraduate teaching laboratories.
  • Document and maintain a detailed up to date inventory and maintenance schedule of all research and teaching equipment in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, including the condition of each item.
  • Develop and oversee standard procedures for issue and use of laboratory equipment and shared research space, including the booking of research laboratory space for stakeholders external to the FKRM following the approval of the Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies).
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of SAFE Work procedures for FKRM teaching and research laboratories.
  • Keep a log of parking passes used for research participants and manage the inventory.
  • Keep a log of equipment being signed out and manage the inventory.
  • Schedule the use of labs independently or in conjunction with other booking services that exist in Faculty (i.e., Facilities) for users, including Researchers, Recreation Services, Bison Sports, and potentially outside users.
  • Assist with the development of technical service agreements for outside users of space or when researchers are using the space on contracts on behalf of outside entities.
  • Provide lab tours upon request from the Dean or Associate Deans of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management.
  • Facilitate the repair of equipment by outside companies, when necessary.
  • Provide laboratory instruction when requested by supervisors.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining lab manuals and other lab materials when requested by course instructors.
  • Assist in setting expectations for the objectives of each lab to be carried out when requested by course instructors.
  • Assist in creating marking keys for questions, assignments, and quizzes when requested by course instructors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
