The Role

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada’s largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for a Technical Officer to support our Aquatic and Crop Resource Development Research Centre (ACRD). The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

As part of the Zebrafish Toxicology, Genomics and Neurobiology team the Platform Technical Officer will support NRC, other government departments and industry research activities through technical assistance, animal care and facility maintenance of the NRC zebrafish facility in Halifax. The incumbent will be part of a multidisciplinary team, providing essential support for ongoing projects and programs involving our industry partners and other government departments and agencies in the area of toxicology and biomedical research.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in one of the life sciences or significant experience in a related field.

Preference will be given to candidates with a graduate degree in biology and/or toxicology.

Preference will be given to candidates who have Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) certification regarding laboratory animal care.

Experience

  • Hands-on experience in the maintenance of the health and safety of research animals within a fish research facility.

  • Experience in performing fish husbandry and technical duties following standard operating protocols related to animal care.

Assets:

  • Experience in operating and maintaining recirculating aquatic systems;
  • Experience in maintaining a zebrafish breeding colony;
  • Experience in routine practices using zebrafish as a model organism for evaluating toxicity or biomedical research

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of fish husbandry, breeding and development.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety best practices required to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Ability to review existing and generate new standard operating procedures related to fish husbandry.
  • Demonstrated ability to write high quality reports and communicate findings to partners.

Behavioural Competencies

Compensation

From $66,126 to $91,012 per annum.
