About the role

As a key member of the Blakely team, the Controller plays a critical role in leading and managing the accounting, reporting, and control functions that support our growing fundraising agency. This role is both hands-on and strategic, ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and partnering with leadership to support decision-making and sustainable growth.

This is an ideal opportunity for a CPA-designated finance professional who enjoys both leading and rolling up their sleeves in a dynamic, purpose-driven environment.

You will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, lead financial reporting in compliance with IFRS / Canadian GAAP, and provide financial insights that support business strategy. The Controller also drives process improvements and efficiencies across the finance function, while building strong partnerships with senior leaders and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all accounting, reporting, and control functions (general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, fixed assets, month-end close, reconciliations)
  • Oversee preparation of timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS / Canadian GAAP
  • Design, implement, and enhance internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard assets & ensure reliable financial reporting
  • Partner with senior management to develop budgets, forecasts, and analysis of variances
  • Drive process improvements, automation, and best practices to streamline accounting operations
  • Lead external audits, coordinate with auditors, tax advisors, and ensure compliance with statutory reporting obligations
  • Provide financial insights and decision support to operational leaders (e.g. profitability analysis, cost control, capital investment evaluation)
  • Monitor cash flow and working capital; lead monthly cash forecasting
  • Participate in special projects, system implementations, and strategic initiatives as needed

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • 5–7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with exposure to controller-level responsibilities
  • Experience preparing financial statements and managing month-end and year-end close processes
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (IFRS or Canadian GAAP)
  • Solid proficiency with accounting/ERP systems (QuickBooks experience an asset); comfort leading process/system improvements is a plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills — ability to translate financial data into insights for non-finance stakeholders
  • High integrity, strong attention to detail, and process orientation

Nice-to-Haves

  • Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager
  • Industry experience in fundraising/marketing, or in other service-oriented businesses such as agencies, consulting firms, or professional services organizations.
  • Familiarity with tax, treasury, or multi-entity environments
  • Experience with financial modeling or M&A diligence

Salary Range: The starting salary range for this position is $90,000 – $130,000 commensurate with experience (plus eligibility for a performance-based bonus). In addition, a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and vision care, 3 weeks’ vacation plus an additional 9.5 Blakely days off (half day Fridays before each long weekend and the office is closed for one week at the end of December each year).

Location: This is a location-flexible work from home position, within Ontario. Maintaining a good working relationship is key to success, so we gather our entire team together 3 – 4 times a year in Aurora, ON. In-person department meetings, or one-on-one meetings with your manager will also be required throughout the year. For those that live 150KMs or more away from Aurora, ON we cover all travel expenses in line with Blakely’s travel policy.
