Cross Connection Inspector

About the role

Under supervision of the Cross Connection Control Program Coordinator, this position inspects industrial, commercial and residential facilities to ensure compliance with the Water Works Bylaw, Western Canada Water and Wastewater Cross Connection Control Manual, American Water Works Standards, the Citys Backflow Prevention Program and plumbing regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspects and reports existing and new construction installations of backflow prevention assemblies for compliance with legislative standards. Examines construction plans and inspects actual plumbing installations.
  • Acts as liaison with owners, occupants, mechanical contractors and plumbers regarding, annual testing, inspection reports, plumbing configurations, backflow violations and incident-related follow-up and reporting.
  • Directs corrective measures to assure adherence to standards, where necessary.
  • Provides technical assistance with backflow assembly installation and code compliance.
  • Maintains test equipment and ensures annual verification of accuracy.
  • Performs plumbing tasks in support of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Division.
  • Prepares inspection schedules and appointments.
  • Prepares reports and maintains accurate and complete records (manual and automated).
  • Assists with the development of public awareness program for cross connection and backflow prevention.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training And Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12 education.

  • Possession of a Saskatchewan Journeyman Plumbers Certificate.

  • Possession of a Cross Connection Control Specialist Certificate.

  • Three years’ journeyman experience in plumbing construction and maintenance, backflow prevention and building construction.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, recognized first aid certificate.

  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence and access to a vehicle suitable for the performance of the duties.

Knowledge, Abilities And Skills:

  • Considerable knowledge of the safety practices and principles related to the plumbing trade and backflow prevention assemblies.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of local codes, Provincial Plumbing Code, ordinances and laws governing plumbing, backflow prevention devices and test procedures.
  • Knowledge of potential sources of contamination to the water supply and distribution systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to test and repair backflow prevention assemblies.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and plan specifications and to prepare plans and cost estimates for plumbing system installations for new and existing facilities.
  • Ability to maintain complete, organized, accurate and efficient record-keeping system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse customers.
  • Ability to use a keyboard and word-processing, database, spreadsheet programs and other software applications required for the position.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
