This advanced practice Nurse Practitioner role provides specialized care across Hematology/Oncology and Neonatal Intensive Care within the Women's and Children's Health Program. The NP delivers comprehensive, family-centered care to high-risk newborns and children with complex hematologic and oncologic conditions, including management of Sickle Cell Disease within one of Ontario's largest POGO satellite centers. The role encompasses expert clinical practice, consultation, education, research, and leadership through collaborative practice with physicians and interprofessional teams.
Principal Responsibilities Clinical Practice
- Provides comprehensive care to neonatal and paediatric hematology/oncology populations, developing innovative approaches for critically ill neonates and children with Sickle Cell Disease, hemoglobinopathies, and oncologic conditions
- Performs comprehensive assessments, interprets diagnostic results, and develops individualized care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and interprofessional teams
- Coordinates interdisciplinary care for Sickle Cell Disease patients in outpatient settings with integrated support across chronic and acute episodes
Consultation & Education
- Provides expert consultation on complex symptom management, psychosocial support, and professional practice issues
- Develops educational resources and provides mentorship for nursing staff, students, and interprofessional team members
- Partners with families to navigate chronic illness, providing health education based on developmental stage and learning needs
Research & Leadership
- Integrates evidence-based practice, participates in research studies, and engages teams in quality improvement initiatives
- Provides leadership in neonatology and paediatric hematology/oncology, including implementation of Ontario Health Quality Standards for Sickle Cell Disease
- Acts as change agent, fostering teamwork and linking patients to community resources
Qualifications Required
- Master's degree in Nursing with approved NP component or Post-Master NP Diploma
- Current RN(EC) license with College of Nurses of Ontario with paediatric focus
- Minimum 5 years clinical nursing experience in paediatrics, neonatology, or specialized paediatric areas
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Innovative critical thinking, excellent problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) with experience advancing EDI objectives
- NRP certification
- PALS certification
Preferred
- Minimum 2 years as Neonatal NP in Level 2/3 NICU
- Experience with hematology populations (Sickle Cell Disease, hemoglobinopathies) and paediatric oncology settings
- Previous clinical leadership or mentorship role with quality improvement initiative experience
