The Project Engineering Group is a dedicated group of up to 10 mechanical engineers assigned to project teams tasked with designing, building, and commissioning scientific and technical infrastructure to further TRIUMF’s research goals. There is an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer-in-training to join us and demonstrate excellence in engineering practices. We work closely with structural and electrical engineers, and with other specialized groups. As an example of the stimulating variety of work, the Project Engineering group has previously designed cryogenic systems, structural supports of all kinds, radioactive beam transport and target systems, high voltage electromagnetic devices, particle detectors, specialized high voltage conduits, radiation shielding layouts, below-the-hook lifting devices, remotely handled mechanisms, and heat dissipation systems. Over time, the candidate would have the opportunity to work closely with technicians on unique tools such as precision laser alignment systems, 3D surface mappers, hot cells, 3D printers, EDM machines, and much more.

This position will serve as an emerging professional level, mechanical engineer-in-training. The successful candidate will contribute to the mechanical design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of TRIUMF’s key projects starting with Canada’s most advanced isotope laboratory (

). There will also be the opportunity to provide engineering support for TRIUMF’s full portfolio of projects later.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • The Project Engineer-in-Training reports directly to the Project Engineering Group Leader
  • Work with a moderate amount of guidance and direction, and report progress to the project team, the Engineer of Record, and the Group Leader regularly.
  • Work together with the project team to achieve scientific and engineering deliverables while managing the balance of quality, costs, and schedule.
  • These relationships are characterized by respect, professionalism, and competence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support on portions of larger projects and/or short-term work assignments with a moderate scope including conceptual design, detailed design, procurement/fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, and operation of specialized equipment, with timelines less than 1 year
  • Write technical documents such as requirements specification, drawings/schematics, engineering reports, etc.
  • Manage safety on the job by ensuring all installation and maintenance work is done in accordance with TRIUMF procedures and safety protocols
  • Collaborate with the Design and Fabrication Group on the preparation of engineering drawings and fabrication of components

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

  • There are no direct supervisory responsibilities with this position. The successful candidate will provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or technical employees
  • You will coordinate the field installation of equipment, commission and troubleshoot with TRIUMF technicians or external contractors
