About Us: HIRO is a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting adults with acquired brain injury (ABI), funded by Ontario Health. Since 1987, HIRO serves individuals from across Ontario and provides evidence-based, client and family-centered rehabilitation in residential and community settings. A collaborative network of clinical professionals, support workers, family members, and community advocates work together to help clients achieve meaningful goals. About the Role: This is a unique volunteer opportunity to give back to your community, share your professional expertise and lived experience, and make a meaningful impact on the lives of our clients and their families.

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will: Provide governance oversight and strategic guidance to support HIRO's mission and vision. Review meeting materials and reports in advance to support informed decision-making. Participate in quarterly Board meetings and committee meetings, hybrid or virtually. Attend at least on in-person annually, in Hamilton, Ontario. Collaborate with fellow Board Directors on key organizational decisions and exercise fiduciary responsibility. Contribute to long-term planning and organizational sustainability.

About You: You are passionate about making a difference and believe in the value of rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injuries. You bring professional expertise and lived experience related to HIRO’s mission and strategic priorities, and a collaborative approach to nonprofit governance.

We are particularly seeking individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas: Human Resources Capital Infrastructure Cyber Security and Technology Accounting Auditing

We strongly encourage applications from individuals with lived experience with brain injury, as well as members of racialized, Francophone, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities. We believe that diverse perspectives strengthen our Board governance and help us better serve our communities.

We’re proud to have the experience needed to support people with moderate to severe ABI in the community. Since 1987, we have been committed to working with acquired brain injury survivors and their families to address the challenges they face with dignity and respect.

HIRO is unique in its ability to provide evidence-based, client and family centered ABI rehabilitation care in the community. We work with clients and their families to achieve goals that are meaningful for them throughout our continuum of care; from six residential care homes, to transitional living apartments and to community services including group as well as outreach. HIRO serves people from across Ontario through services in Hamilton, Burlington, Niagara, St. Catharines, Haldimand and Brant regions.

Each rehabilitation program is tailored to fit the needs of the client and supported by a network of clinical professionals, care workers, family, friends and community advocates who help facilitate transitions toward greater independence. Our goal is to help our clients realize their full and unique potential. We are a promise of hope after ABI.
