Job Synopsis
The senior communications coordinator collaborates in developing communications for MCC Manitoba and is responsible for implementation of provincial communications plans. This includes content and collateral planning, creation and implementation, brand management and media relations in support of provincial communications goals and objectives. The position includes a strong focus on written content creation and telling stories of impact.
The senior communications coordinator will report to the development and communications director while working closely with other members of the communications and donor relations (CDR) team and other departments. The senior communications coordinator is a member of the marketing and communications unit (together with the communications generalist) within the larger CDR department. The communications unit works collaboratively, as well as with provincial colleagues and national marketing and communications network counterparts, to achieve organizational communications objectives.
This is a full-time salaried position with a generous benefits package. General work hours apply with flexibility to travel within the province and to be available for occasional evening, weekend and overnight commitments.

- Post-secondary education in communications, journalism or related field OR a commensurate mix of expertise and experience
- 2-3 years’ experience creating written content and implementing communications plans
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills with experience writing for different audiences and channels including print, web and digital
- Experience in all aspects of content creation including idea generation, interviewing, writing and copy editing
- Strong time and priority management skills, with keen attention to detail and the ability to manage mutiple projects at one time
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with people of all ages and backgrounds
- A healthy balance of patience, humour and energy
- Heart for justice, active peacemaking and global understanding
- Availability for occasional evening and weekend work
- Valid Manitoba driver’s license
- Favourable police record check
- Legally able to work in Canada
Preferred:
- Experience working with the media
- Understanding of good graphic design practices and principles
- Proficiency in photography and/or videography is an asset
- Supervisory experience is an asset
- Experience working in a non-profit environment is an asset
- Understanding of and appreciation for MCC structure, program and goals is an asset
Key Responsibilities
Coordination & Content Production – 75%
- Implement annual communications plan in support of provincial priorities and the strategic goals of the national marketing and communications network.
- Draft clear, concise and compelling short- and long-form written content for stories, highlights, summaries, media releases and other copy focused on provincial program and social enterprise initiatives.
- Responsible for creating effective and compelling communications for external audiences in alignment with MCC Manitoba’s communications strategy.
- Work collaboratively to assist with content creation, design and distribution of e-newsletters, impact reports, promotional collateral and digital platform content (website, social).
- Provide promotional and communications support for provincial programs, social enterprise and executive office.
- Coordinate and oversee paid advertising initiatives, review and draft ad copy, oversee creative assets and liaise with designers/photographers/videographers as needed in collaboration with the marketing and communications team.
- Ensure consistent implementation of MCC’s brand across all communications, collateral and channels.
- Copyedit, proof and provide feedback on internal presentations, new collateral (eg. merchandise, promotional items) and third-party fundraiser/partner materials as needed.
Media Relations – 10%
- Maintain relationships with provincial media to secure earned media coverage in Manitoba.
- Plan, prepare and distribute press releases, briefs and media updates in consultation with the development and communications director.
- Coordinate media interviews with organization spokespersons and provide coaching as needed.
- Produce briefing notes, key messages and talking points for organization spokespersons in consultation with the development and communications director and senior staff.
Team Participation/Administration – 15%
- Participate in the CDR department and support the work of other departments:
- Participate in unit, departmental and all-staff meetings.
- Assist in implementing MCC Manitoba’s communications strategy and developing and maintaining the provincial communications calendar.
- Ensure timely, organized management, tracking and completion of interdepartmental marketing and communications requests in collaboration with the marketing and communications team.
- Support the development and communications director and assist with additional unit work as required.
- Provide administrative support for communications reporting and digital asset management as required.
