Position Details
What You Will Do
- To provide confidential administration and litigation support to in house counsel.
- Drafting, revising, updating and preparing litigation documents, including Notices of Examination, Affidavits of Service, Affidavits of Documents, Jury Notices, Motion Records, Notice to Defend, Statements of Defence, Trial Records, Responses to License Appeal Tribunal (“LAT”) Applications and LAT Case Conference Summaries
- Filing documents with court and the LAT
- Collecting answers to undertakings and organizing productions
- Preparation of document briefs
- Downloading electronic documents
- Summarizing productions
- Arranging examinations for discovery, examinations under oath, mediations and defence medical examinations
- Preparation of medical briefs to send to medical experts
- Maintaining the lawyers’ schedules and diaries, including examinations for discovery, meetings and telephone conferences
- Keeping track of file activity and diarizing limitation periods
- Filing and making sure files are up to date
- Preparation of Releases, Consents and Orders
- Opening and closing legal files
- Creating and updating contact information of plaintiff counsel, client, co- defendant, expert witnesses and court officers
- Communicating with adjusters on a regular basis to advise them about file status
- Ensuring privacy and confidentiality of records and communications
- Requesting cheques and paying respective party (i.e. Plaintiff for productions)
- Ordering Supplies as needed
- Preparation of quarterly accounts and expense tracking
- Transcribe occasional dictation
- Preparation for trials, pre-trials, mediations and LAT hearings
- Open, sort and distribute mail
- Minute taking and meeting preparation
- Scheduling meetings
- Assume additional duties for the legal department as required
Who You Are
- Minimum 2 to 5 years relevant working experience as a legal assistant and law clerk
- Previous experience in Insurance Defence and Accident Benefits environment is required
- Law Clerk’s Certification is an asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure and the litigation process required
- Basic understanding of Statutory Accidents Benefits Schedule and dispute resolution process
- Highly organized with time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Ability to work independently and prioritize work volume
- Focused on detail, accuracy and grammar
- Client focused
- Results oriented
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Aptitude for learning
