Communications Designer - Temporary Location: Corporate Board Office, Schumacher Ontario

Start Date: May 11. 2026 to May 25, 2027 or return of absent employee

Position Summary Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Designer will provide support to the Communications Department and District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) schools.

The Communications Designer Will

  • support the Communications Officer by completing administrative tasks and implementing strategies for internal and external communications.
  • Support the Board and DSB1 schools in creating systems and content for family engagement and community outreach, across several platforms.

All communications will be aligned with the vision, mission and priorities of DSB1 in keeping with the visual identity standards of the Board, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA).

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Implement communications plans and strategies to support the vision, mission, and priorities of the Board and schools.
  • Support the Board and schools in maintaining up-to-date and relevant website content.
  • Lead the development and implementation of public education information campaigns, including content suitable for various traditional and social platforms.
  • Support the ordering and maintenance of Board promotional material in keeping with visual identity standards.
  • Provide photography/videography and graphic design support to various portfolios.
  • Remain current with effective practices, trends, tools, applications and emerging technologies in communications, including social media and graphic design, using a variety of platforms.
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned in support of the communications function.

Qualifications And Required Skills

  • College diploma and/or university degree in communications, marketing, public relations or a related field.
  • Experience in a communications role supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of corporate communications strategies and initiatives.
  • Superior level of proficiency in the use of communications tools, including website content management systems, social media applications, graphic design programs, photo/video editing software, presentation software and office software.
  • Knowledge of communications principles, procedures and practices.
  • Superior written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Highly developed research, analytical and creative skills to develop and implement innovative and relevant communications strategies relating to diverse issues in support of the Boards strategic directions.
  • Proven diplomacy and flexibility to respond to emerging issues, including the ability to remain calm under pressure, deal with ambiguity, and deliver results under tight timelines.
  • Excellent project management skills and organizational skills.
  • Photography and video production skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of public education an asset.
  • Valid drivers license and access to a vehicle for use at work.

Salary: In accordance with the current non-union compensation schedule - $79,483.82 per year

District School Board Ontario North East is an Ontario English Public School Board serving Northeastern Ontario from Hearst to Temagami. It covers an extensive area of 25,000 square kilometres.
