The Position

Reporting to the Vice President, Government Relations and working closely with the Government Relations (GR) and Generation Council teams, the Manager of Government Relations advances the association’s work with government decision makers. They will support the implementation of Electricity Canada’s annual government advocacy program, including coordinating with elected officials and political staff, monitoring parliamentary committees, and identifying and tracking key issues.

The manager will assist in research and in the drafting of high-level messaging and submissions, and then ensure that it is seen by the right people. They will help organize Electricity Canada’s annual Hill Day and support other major events. The ideal candidate will have experience working for elected officials. They will be an excellent written and oral communicator. The candidate must be organized, efficient and independent, but must also be willing to speak up with clarifying questions or ideas for improving processes, outputs or strategies in support of broader Electricity Canada objectives. Candidates able to communicate in both English and French are preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Work with members of Electricity Canada’s Government Relations Strategy Committee on federal advocacy. Organize and support outreach to government officials, including Members of Parliament, Senators, and political staff. Tracking legislation and parliamentary committee work, including identifying opportunities for Electricity Canada to appear. Develop and implement issue-specific advocacy programs as required for Electricity Canada councils and Committees. Regular preparation of Association correspondence from Electricity Canada to various government officials, senior bureaucrats, and thought leaders. Supporting member advocacy requests as needed, including the work of Electricity Canada’s Government Relations Strategy Committee. Assist in developing Electricity Canada responses to a dynamic set of fast-moving circumstances flowing from federal legislation, regulation, and policy, including monitoring and analyzing notable federal announcements, reports, key meetings, parliamentary committees, and house and senate proceedings. Perform various tasks in support of broader GR program services, projects and events, as needed by the Government Relations Team.

Qualifications

University degree and/or equivalent experience in a comparable field. Minimum 3 years experience working in government, industry or a trade association. Previous work experience on Parliament Hill with knowledge of the government and the federal legislative processes. Strong communicator. Ability to work independently. Organized and detail-oriented. No restrictions on lobbying under the The Lobbying Act. French/English bilingualism is considered a strong asset.
