The Departments of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, are growing research and education-focused Departments. All three Departments have fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada residency programs.
Position Summary
The Team Lead, Medical Education in the Departments of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medicine provides leadership and supervision to a team of medical education administrators responsible for three accredited residency programs with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
This position works directly with the Program Directors and Program Administrators to continuously improve the Postgraduate Residency Programs within the Departments of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medicine, and collaborates closely with department leadership. The Team Lead monitors all residency postgraduate learning activities in the Departments and acts as a primary source of information relating to postgraduate medical education.
The Team Lead assists team members in understanding assigned roles and performance objectives and strives to build a collaborative team through guidance, training, and mentorship. As the senior technical expert on the team, the team lead serves as the point of contact for inquiries and escalations while optimizing program/service and operational performance.
In all facets of this role, this position endeavors to integrate and advance the University’s commitments to access, community and belonging (ACB).
This position understands, fulfills, and promotes the health, safety and environment responsibilities identified in university policy.
Duties
- Education leadership – the Team Lead oversees the activities for the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medicine residency programs.
- Oversees the coordination of the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) (and sponsored trainee (if eligible)) process for the departments’ residency programs.
- Develops and implements policies and standard operating procedures to streamline the administration of postgraduate medical education. Monitors staff workload; helps to prioritize and or delegate to other team members when necessary.
- Develops and manages the medical education office budget for Department approval and sets financial objectives for the future.
- Represents residency medical education leadership on university committees and working groups.
- Coaches team members, program directors on how to achieve performance objectives or how to develop the necessary skills to achieve required results.
- Liaises with Program Directors to ensure the level of administration support is effective and efficient.
- Provides orientation and onboarding for new education team members.
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate Degree (ie, business, commerce or education). Work experience and a diploma will be considered.
- 5 years of experience hiring, supervising, mentoring, and managing employee performance within a large, complex, unionized environment.
- Previous experience in medical education within a Department or at a Faculty level is required.
- Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain positive, professional, collaborative working relationships with all parties at all organizational levels.
- Demonstrates ongoing excellent communication with all from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrates ability to manage time and workload effectively and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrates ability to apply and adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines, FOIPP, records management protocols, and all relevant University policies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the University of Alberta policies and procedures is required.
- Demonstrates proficiency in MS Office and Google Workspace is required.
- Understanding of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons accreditation standards.
- Understanding of the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta agreement.
- The ability to think critically about existing, complex processes and to produce standard operating procedures to streamline these processes.
- The ability to meet multiple deadlines, prioritize multiple projects and work with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior UofA experience in a supervisory role is considered an asset.
